For my part, I find Mats stuff to be somewhat variable. I prefer him in situations like The Thing and Tarfala, but I've not been won over by his experiments in electronics. I appreciate that he wants to expand his palette, but i don't think he touches on his strengths in that kind of music. Just my taste perhaps. Quote

Leeway Posted December 30, 2011 Report Posted December 30, 2011 (edited) Never saw that cover for Tijuana Moods. I know! I had a heck of a time finding an illustration. Almost all list the one with the lovely senorita on it. I didn't even find it listed in Discogs. The album number is RCA APL1-0939. Jacket states "Formerly LSP 2533." The LP has an RCA Victor tan label. Edited December 30, 2011 by Leeway Quote
Clunky Posted December 30, 2011 Report Posted December 30, 2011 (edited) Particularly like Fresh Garbage by Spirit and Time of the season - The Zombies but it;s a pretty decent compilation from CBS 1968 followed by preferring the latter. I played both of these last night and found them both to be excellent, hard to choose Edited December 30, 2011 by Clunky Quote

Leeway Posted December 30, 2011 Report Posted December 30, 2011 Best thing about this Kenny Wheeler album on ECM is that Evan Parker is on it, and when he gets a chance to really play, he blows that whole gauzy, vaporous ECM sound right out the door. Quote

I was equally impressed by EP's contribution. I've seen him play several times with Wheeler's ensembles and he invariably adds a contrasting 'edge' to proceedings - not that KW's anything other than mighty fine without him Quote

jeffcrom Posted December 31, 2011 Report Posted December 31, 2011 Seattle Beat (Capitol Custom). Picked this up in Washington earlier this week - it's a 1962 collection of Seattle jazz. Much of it is pretty bad (when I die and go to Hell I expect Myron Hinkle & the Blue Banjo Boys' version of "Goofus" to be playing continuously on the sound system), but there are two tracks by Corky Corcoran, a Hawkins-influenced tenor player I've always liked. And there are a couple of good cuts by Chuck Mahaffay & The Individuals. Mahaffay played drums and clarinet; Larry Coryell was in The Individuals a couple of years later, but there's no guitar on these tunes. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted December 31, 2011 Report Posted December 31, 2011 (edited) Ike Quebec Congo Lament My award for the most ridiculous Blue Note cover art ever ! I've seen one worse. It was the reissue of Grant Green's "Goin' West." Same series that this Quebec session is from. I can't find the cover online. It is of a acoustic guitar leaning up against a cactus.
