paul secor Posted February 25, 2012 Report Posted February 25, 2012 Sonny Clark - Wynton Kelly: The Immortal Session from Blue Note (BN/Toshiba EMI Japan) Why "Session" when there were two - 1951 (Kelly); 1958 (Clark), and why "Immortal", I have no idea. But the music is fine. Quote

Leeway Posted February 25, 2012 Report Posted February 25, 2012 Leroy Jenkins was such a fantastic artist. For my tastes, one of the very best creative music violinists. An album I'd like to have in original form, but alas, only in reissue for now: Quote

JSngry Posted February 26, 2012 Report Posted February 26, 2012 Lee Konitz Meets Warne Marsh Again (Pausa) That's one of the more amazing Warne Marsh performances on record...and there are many...which is to say some of the best 20th Century music on record.. And Lee is in damn fine form too. Not having a chordal instrument freed these guys up in all kinds of ways, and there's really not that much of it on record. Just..superior music in every regard, and I mean that as absolutely as I'll ever mean it about anything. Quote

jeffcrom Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 Louis Armstrong - Disney Songs the Satchmo Way (Buena Vista stereo) Don't laugh. This 1968 record is my favorite late Louis album. Yeah, most of the songs are stupid, and have leaden accompaniments with corny choirs, but neither of those things ever stopped Louis from being brilliant. And along with the lousy songs are some pretty good ones, like "When You Wish Upon a Star" and "Chim Chim Cheree." In addition to the great singing, there's a trumpet solo on almost every song, and the playing is just brilliant - every solo has surprising note choices, unexpected suspensions, and asymmetrical phrasing. This is some of Armstrong's absolute best latter-day trumpet playing. Quote
vinyltim Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 What a great album. The OJC copy I have sounds good too, but it's nice to have an early pressing.... http://www.timenjoysrecords.com/records/sonny-rollins-way-out-west Quote
