niels Posted April 22, 2015 Report Posted April 22, 2015 (edited) The Group (Ahmed Abdullah, Marion Brown, Billy Bang, Sirone, Fred Hopkins, Andrew Cyrille) - Live [2012, NoBusiness] It can't be stressed enough, how great it is to have labels like NoBusiness around who do a fantastic job of making this historically important music available to us. But besides the historical importance, this is just also a great album to listen to. Mikolaj Trzaska, Devin Hoff, Michael Zergang - Sleepless in Chicago [2013, NoBusiness] For some reason Trzaska is one of the (what I call) power players who I just really love. Although his sound can get real aggressive and forceful, there's also always heart and spirituality to his playing which makes him stand out against many others for me. colinmce Posted April 23, 2015 Report Posted April 23, 2015 Really want to check out that Trzaska, but those things are just too damn expensive. Quote
niels Posted April 23, 2015 Report Posted April 23, 2015 Actually I think €18,- is a fair price for a vinyl album, but if you order from NoBusiness directly shipping can get quite pricey. For this, I tend to order from Multikulti (Poland) if I buy more items ( I paid around €7 for shipping two vinyl albums and two CD's). Quote

clifford_thornton Posted April 24, 2015 Report Posted April 24, 2015 Amanaz - Africa - (Now Again, US reissue) great remastering although the pressing could be better. Still, what a great album. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted April 24, 2015 Report Posted April 24, 2015 John Coltrane "my favorite things" (Atlantic, USA). Finally obtained a deep groove white fan stereo original...now I have to decide whether to keep my slightly later black fan mono issue! Quote

Finally obtained a deep groove white fan stereo original...now I have to decide whether to keep my slightly later black fan mono issue! Go for the French Atlantic mono. Good pressing and a nice alternative cover. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted April 24, 2015 Report Posted April 24, 2015 A good French pressing!? :0 Seems like a rare bird...although my Pathe albums sound clean... Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 24, 2015 Report Posted April 24, 2015 The Mouloudjis sound pretty good, as do a couple of my Pathés. Come to think of it, a number of the Americas and Saravahs from the '70s also sound fine. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted April 24, 2015 Report Posted April 24, 2015 Yeah it's a generalization for sure with numerous exceptions, but over the years it seems I've encountered more noisy French pressings then from any other country... Quote
Clunky Posted April 26, 2015 Report Posted April 26, 2015 Cecil Taylor Unit-------Dark unto themselves-------(Enja) Accidentally picked up the Enja when I already had the Inner City ( different cover) . I prefer the Enja- sounds better. I'll be keeping the Enja despite my copy having a huge London Weekend Television Music Services sticker on the front left. Signed out for use just once, in April 1989. I wonder if the LWT viewers did in the end experience the seismic shock that was the Cecil Taylor Unit. Some how I can't see it. Quote
sidewinder Posted April 26, 2015 Report Posted April 26, 2015 My copy of McLaughlin's 'Extrapolation' on Marmalade has an LWT stamp on it. I think my Ronnie Scott 'Serious Gold' has their stamp as well. Quote

The CD version has an extra 12 minutes of music that was edited out of the LP, probably for time constraints. I haven't compared the two for sound quality. Quote

Homefromtheforest Posted April 27, 2015 Report Posted April 27, 2015 Matthias Eick "Midwest" (ECM, Germany). This one is a "grower"...didn't knock me out the first time but after repeated listenings it's becoming a big favorite of mine. Jon Balke is fantastic on this album. Quote
