Clunky Posted April 29, 2015 Report Posted April 29, 2015 Kenny Dorham 'Jazz Contemporary' (Time DG mono) This has the better cover but "Showboat" also on Time, is the better album. "Jazz Contemporary" is decent enough but I play "Showboat" much more frequently. I've an Oriole pressing of the latter, which is really not a great pressing. Just a bit fuzzy and unfocused. Quote

Used to have a fairly crackly copy of Jazz Contemporary - I couldn't get into it but probably couldn't get past the surface noise either. If I could find cheap clean copies of both, I'd give 'em a shot. Quote
sidewinder Posted April 29, 2015 Report Posted April 29, 2015 (edited) Picked it up quite inexpensively in Tokyo. By Japanese standards it is probably a bit inferior as there is evidence of a bit of minor damp on the cover and a bit of surface noise but it looks and sounds fine to me. Less than 20 bucks ! Homefromtheforest Posted April 30, 2015 Report Posted April 30, 2015 Andrew Hill "Point of Departure" (Blue Note, NY USA stereo w/ "ear") After dealing with a rather dull sounding Japanese Toshiba LP for over 20 years it's a great joy to finally get this original stereo USA issue with plastylite mark in NM condition for a reasonable price (around $100). Sounds remarkable... Quote

Great package but I must admit I have not played my copy in over 10 years... It's heavy though I suppose at the end of the day, all their records, whether duos or ensembles, are "of a piece." Quote
Clunky Posted May 1, 2015 Report Posted May 1, 2015 Dexter Gordon ---------Our Man in Paris -----------(BN) Music Matters 33 This is still probably my favourite Dexter album. It was my first as I recall. This new edition is up to the usual MM standards and sounds fantastic. I'll be keeping the CD for the bonus track which i love as much as the rest of the album. Quote

Clunky Posted May 2, 2015 Report Posted May 2, 2015 Bennie Green--------Swings the blues-------(MVM) 1959 date on the cheapest of budget labels. Pressing makes most Jazzlands seem pristine. None the less, strong playing by Bennie, Jimmy Forrest and Sonny Clark. None of the band are credited on the label/cover. Quote
