I get the impression he's ploughed a fairly individual furrow, initially playing with a fairly consistent group of West Coast fellow travellers. His later discography features some very interesting collaborations. He seems to have mastered a wide range of woodwinds and likes to feature a good number on any release. If have a later solo disc which is very impressive. I tend to dip into his discography every now and again and realise that I should do more often. Always adventurous but in a way that has a lightness of touch and space to the ensemble playing. I'm sure there's others on the board who know his work better And, I'd love to hear that Peacock/Bley again. Heard it once at a friends a long time ago today's other arrival Joe Farrell really stands out on initial listening Edited April 9, 2018 by mjazzg Quote
mjazzg Posted April 10, 2018 Report Posted April 10, 2018 apologies for the oversized image... fiery stuff from Mr Vesala and cohorts. Just released on the Svart label. Not too sure the three minutes of interview included will mean much outside his homeland audience though.Time for some Finnish lessons perhaps. Quote

They're Finnish Radio recordings. There's another with Aaltonen and Vesala in a quartet which I also bought. Recording quality is good. My next purchase will be their reissue of Nana by Vesala's trio as I'm not likely to find an original at an affordable price. I got mine from Juno Quote

I've found their restock email featuie works well (wish they'd post with stiffeners though - my only gripe with them) I have a CD of Hot Lotta somewhere. Now that is fiery, from memory Quote

paul secor Posted April 11, 2018 Report Posted April 11, 2018 Monk Plays Ellington It's a shame that most of the pianists who recorded Monk tributes didn't use at least some of the inventiveness and imagination that Monk did in his Ellington tribute. Quote
paul secor Posted April 11, 2018 Report Posted April 11, 2018 Booker Little 4 and Max Roach Probably the worst recorded music I've ever heard from Nola's. They got Booker's trumpet right, but everyone else is somewhere in the distance. Quote

I wondered if mono issues might be better. Interesting music but marred by dreadful audio. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted April 12, 2018 Report Posted April 12, 2018 Maarten Van Norden/Boy Raaymakers Quintet -- Chicken Song -- (BVHaast, NL) picked this up along with a number of other nice Dutch records on vacation to Amsterdam this last week. Quote
Niko Posted April 12, 2018 Report Posted April 12, 2018 Ha, I saw Chicken Song stand at Concerto in Amsterdam last Thursday on my own first visit there... guess it's gone now... had been contemplating getting it next week when I return (along with a few others I left standing there...) Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 12, 2018 Report Posted April 12, 2018 I got it at another shop so I'm sure it's still there! Now, Orkest De Volharding -- s/t -- (De Volharding, NL) excellent album; previously only had the 7", and this is much more full-on. Quote

Niko Posted April 12, 2018 Report Posted April 12, 2018 here is one that I bought that day, Niko Langenhuijsen - Hypo (VaraJazz), from 1984, one of the local (Tilburg) modern Jazz LPs I was still missing... an interesting line-up (trumpet, trombone, violin, cello (Ernst Reijseger) plus rhythm section including Langenhuijsen on piano rather than bass). More boppish than expected - and I am not a big fan of the violin solos... but it does have nice moments. will first have to see what next Saturday in Utrecht does to the music budget... (will anybody else be there?) Quote

(will anybody else be there?) yeah, I've seen that album but never heard it... did pick up a gorgeous duo LP by Reijseger and Sean Bergin called "Mistakes." Recommended. might have to hit the Utrecht fair next year; we were in that city as well on holiday and really fell in love with it. Quote
