paul secor Posted December 19, 2018 Report Posted December 19, 2018 I always get a laugh at the end of "The Nexus" when, a few seconds after the music ends, a voice (Walt Dickerson's?) says. "That's it." Quote
jeffcrom Posted December 19, 2018 Report Posted December 19, 2018 The December Band - Volume II (GHB). Much beloved by trad jazz fans, the December Band was put together for a New England tour in December, 1965. Four New Orleanians - Kid Thomas Valentine, Big Jim Robinson, Captain John Handy, and Sammy Penn - joined with three New Englanders and a Brit (Sammy Rimmington). No less than six LPs were issued from the tour (four under Captain John Handy's name), on Jazz Crusade, GHB, and Pearl. I bought this record on my first visit to New Orleans in 1990. Quote

Can't wait to hear it. At least, I hope it was in that box that came in the other day. Some interesting comments on discogs that the vinyl is DMM from the same source as the studio masters. Can’t vouch either way but - interesting ! Updated - unlikely, based on info in the box. Edited December 20, 2018 by sidewinder Quote

porcy62 Posted December 19, 2018 Report Posted December 19, 2018 Lee Morgan CANDY, BN Music Matters reissue 45rpm. Better then I remember, maybe I was conditioned by the cover, one of the few ugly BN cover imo. Quote
paul secor Posted December 20, 2018 Report Posted December 20, 2018 As much a Ben Webster album as a Harry Edison album - and that's a good thing. (No offense meant toward Mr. Edison.) Quote

Interesting the 1953 sides that have much darker colours than the early ones. In general, as the years went on, I started to begin to have difficulties listening to some very early Bud stuff, since I have difficulties listening to piano runs in the highest register. First I can´t hear the high notes very well starts to sound "thin". As others I started to appreciate much more the later stuff which maybe has lost some virtuosity, but sounds really "deep", especially the way he played the chords on ballads. His "Embraceable You" here is a classic, But still he had all his virtuosity as his flashy runs on "Woodyn You" shows. This 1953 session together with the BN with Fats and Sonny or the 1953 is the greatest early Bud. Quote
