One of my favorite Mississippi hill country bluesmen. Joe Callicott was (is) great. Just listened to some of his 1967 recordings (plus the two sides of his 1930 78) on Arhoolie. Quote
jeffcrom Posted February 1, 2019 Report Posted February 1, 2019 Horace Parlan - On the Spur of the Moment (BN/Music Matters). One of the few (three, I think) of those expensive 45 RPM two-record MM reissues that I have. They do sound good, but I can't see myself going any further down that road. Quote

paul secor Posted February 2, 2019 Report Posted February 2, 2019 I have a couple "Wally" BNs and they sound good to me. There's a long discussion about Wally Traugott on the Hoffman Forums: https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/essential-wally-traugott-masterings.81578/ Evidently, he's best known for his mastering and remastering of rock albums. I didn't know that and have no interest there. Quote
sidewinder Posted February 2, 2019 Report Posted February 2, 2019 The ‘Basra’ sounds pretty good on the ‘Wally’ imprint. I have a stereo orig. NY pressing of that title and will have to cross-check. Some good titles put out in the Wallys - Bobby Hutcherson ‘Patterns’ and Kenny Dorham ‘Whistle Stop’ very effectively cover the requirements for me. Quote

jeffcrom Posted February 3, 2019 Report Posted February 3, 2019 Ken Colyer - Club Session with Colyer (London). Colyer's band is the one European trad band that I might mistake for a New Orleans band in a blindfold test. And that remains true no matter the vintage and no matter who was in the band. One could argue about whether that is a good thing or not, but it at least speaks well for his vision as bandleader and his ability to get that vision across to his musicians. And yet there's a subtle personal spin to the music. I like this stuff. Quote
