Cactus Bob
@ Cactus Bob, I dig the Altec! Thanks, they got it right on these. They really fill the room with great sound,
paul secor
Blue Mitchell: Out of the Blue (Riverside/Alto) Blue Mitchell and the rhythm section play very well on this record. Benny Golson plays magnificently. Edited November 2, 2013 by paul secor

Leeway
Jimmy Lyons (as), Raphe Malik (tp), Karen Borca (bassoon), William Parker (b), Paul Murphy (d). Black Saint LP. I appreciate this album more each time I listen to it. Malik is on fire, and Borca is amazing amidst the maelstrom. Borca's free jazz bassoon playing is being carried forward today by another amazing bassoonist, Katherine Young.

paul secor
Coleman Hawkins/Lester Young (Spotlite) I file this one under Pres. On the Jubilee All Stars recordings, you can almost feel the sweat coming off Hawk, he's working so hard. But as hard as he tries, he can't touch Pres. jeffcrom
Dave Tarras Plays Again (Colonial mono). The klezmer master from around 1960, I think. My mono copy has an even uglier cover than the stereo version shown here - it's orange/brown rather than gold. My wife always makes disparaging comments about it. jeffcrom
After Dave Tarras, I decided to play this great album by his protege and son-in-law: Sam Musiker - Jewish Wedding Dances (Tikva). Musiker played tenor and clarinet with Gene Krupa, but his musical hero was always his father-in-law. They recorded a great album together for Columbia in the 1950s - Tarras' only major-label appearance in the LP era.
