ON THE QT: COOL THINGS I PASS ALONG JUST FOR YOU --> INTERNET EXPLORER'S MARKET SHARE SLIPS The market share held by Microsoft's Internet Explorer has fallen by 1.57 percentage points, according to WebSideStory, which measures Web metrics. A survey found that 94.16 percent of surfers were using IE, down from 95.73 percent. That slippage is the first for Internet Explorer in ages. It occurred as security problems piled up for the Microsoft browser. Apparently, people are moving to Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape and Opera. Personally, I have switched to Firefox. I intend to stay with it at least until Microsoft resolves its security problems. The U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team has recommended such a switch. You can download the free Firefox at: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ In the meantime, Microsoft said it is working on a comprehensive fix for IE. It said it does not think a switch in browsers is warranted. I am sure y'all have seen Claude and others say how unsafe IE is...Claude has mentioned Opera , as have others...I use Netscape , not that crazy about it, tried Opera a few times, just didn't like it either...the cool thing about Firefox is that it looks very much like IE, you can transfer all your IE peferences as well (Download was quick, but the transferring took 30+ minutes) Well, at first it seemed a little slower, but then I realized it wouldn't have all the cookies that download a homepage quickly. Now, it seems to be quite a bit faster, and a great bonus for us is that my Mom's vision is so bad she can't read the anything on the computer anymore, might be able to with this browser, you can make the text MUCH bigger than on IE. I just now downloaded it, so I might find some bugs, but I had no problems with so far, even Allmusic was very quick in loading! Anyone else try it, or hear about problems with it? Uncle Skid Posted July 20, 2004 Report Share Posted July 20, 2004 I've been using it for quite a long time now. It was originally called Phoenix, then Thunderbird, now Firefox. Whatever they call it, it works great for me. The popup blocker is fantastic! I don't know how anybody can use IE with all the annoying popups, plus all of the security issues. I can't really judge how unsafe Internet Explorer is because browser vulnerabilities must be exploited by a website to be dangerous. There are also frequent security problems with the other browsers. But IE has the ActiveX feature that allows to install programs on the PC and that is more often abused than used in a useful manner (like with Windows Update). IE is also very slow compared to Opera and Firefox, and without an add-on it doesn't have a pop-up stopper or some comfortable features (browser tabs) that should be standard today. Opera is probably the best browser for power users, because of it's many configuration options, but Firefox is almost as good, and it's free. Everybody should give it a try. It's possible to use all the browsers in parallel on the same system, so there is no need to choose one and only one browser. Shawn Posted July 20, 2004 Report Share Posted July 20, 2004 I've been using the Mozilla Firefox browser for a couple months now..first at work at my bosses suggestion...now at home. I LOVE this thing, it renders pages with greater detail than IE...it's faster...and the whole Tabbed experience is great. The composer section is very easy to use as well. This tabbed browser is always improving, and is quite a bit quicker and handier than IE or even Firefox (which is becoming my second-favorite, and it's free.) For compatibility with my wife's workplace, we still use Outlook and Outlook express, which, along with the fact that we have a Windows box, requires the continued use of IE for Windows Update and Office Update. And there remains just a few webpages that require IE for acceptable rendering. Avant Browser is a decent tabbed shell for IE, which moves IE functionally in the direction of Firefox and Opera, but it still is subject to the vulnerabilities and performance pitfalls of its IE core. It is really good and a hell of a deal safer than Internet Explorer. Also used Thunderbird too for emails which was good too. I have also on the back of this got rid of Microsoft Office which was tired and have Open Office- free! and very very easy to use. I then went the whole hog and got so ticked off with microsoft that I showed Windows the door and now operate Linux- Kubuntu. Free operating system - very high quality and less crashy Goodbye Bill Gates and global domination and hello non corporate, more cooperative software that is FREE. It was tabbed browsing that got me hooked. Not all sites work well with Firefox, but you can designate specific sites to open in IE-compatible tabs, so that took care of that problem. It was tabbed browsing that got me hooked. Not all sites work well with Firefox, but you can designate specific sites to open in IE-compatible tabs, so that took care of that problem.
