Jim R Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 I was looking for something in the Prestige discography today, and noticed the following (anybody ever heard it?): Eddie Bonnemere Sextet Eddie Bonnemere (p) Kenny Burrell (g) Joe Scott (b) George Brown (d) Moncel (bgo, cga) Jimmy Coloway (tim) VGS, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, September 10, 1964 Oriental Mambo -PR 7354 Why Run Away? - East of the Sun - Ankle Bells Night Song - Man in the Raincoat - * Jazz Oriented / Eddie Bonnemere (PR 7354) Eddie Bonnemere Sextet Eddie Bonnemere (p) Kenny Burrell (g) Joe Scott (b) George Brown (d) Moncel (bgo, cga) Jimmy Coloway (tim) VGS, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, September 21, 1964 Mr. Lucky -PR 7354 When I Fall in Love - Mountain High Valley Low - Lotus Land - Calm Beauty - Theme from a Boy Ten Feet Tall - * Jazz Oriented / Eddie Bonnemere (PR 7354) Fantasy never reissued this, afaik. Bonnemere also had a couple of LP's under his leadership on Roost, neither of which I've ever heard... Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 At one time I had one of the Roosts. Standard, tepid, cocktail piano. Never heard the Prestiges. Quote
Jim R Posted March 27, 2011 Author Report Posted March 27, 2011 Moncel? "congo"? Somebody tell Bob Cunningham to cool it with the damn stamper already. I have absolutely no memory of posting this query, so thanks for reminding me. Curious and obsessive creature that I am, I'm... on the trail. Quote
mikeweil Posted March 27, 2011 Report Posted March 27, 2011 I'd buy this LP if I ever came across a copy ... looks like this session was the only ever recorded by a percussionist naming himself "Moncel". Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 I have this album. It is a good and fairly elusive exotica album. I will spin it again this weekend and post my impressions. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 I just played "Jazz Orient-ed" again. I have a mono copy on Prestige. It is a pleasant album. Neither a great jazz nor great exotica album by any stretch, but a nice album with cool, exotic late night vibe. I starred about 2/3 of the selections when I first listened, meaning that I deemed them DJable at the time. Based on today's spin, I would agree. Kenny Burrell plays guitar but he's very much in the background. The percussion is nice but does not overwhelm. The piano playing is in what I would call tasteful, minimalist cocktail territory. There are a few originals and a handful of tunes I never heard of. The rest are standards that either have an eastern theme or eastern slant. Nothing to get in an eBay bidding war over, but worth a few bucks if you like stuff in an exotica/cocktail jazz vibe. Quote
GA Russell Posted June 26, 2011 Report Posted June 26, 2011 The last 78 we got in our house (1955?) was Man in a Raincoat by a female singer whose name I don't remember, but I remember that it was on the Cadence label. My sister bought it. I guess it was a hit on the radio. Quote
Ted O'Reilly Posted June 26, 2011 Report Posted June 26, 2011 (edited) The Man In The Raincoat?!? A big-time Canadian hit, it was, it was... (Starts about 1:12 in). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Wright_(composer) ...Gee, even found that original 78: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alyK8SgUTCc&feature=related Edited June 26, 2011 by Ted O'Reilly Quote
GA Russell Posted June 27, 2011 Report Posted June 27, 2011 Thanks a lot Ted! Wikipedia says that I was right about the year being 1955. It was just a stab. Quote
