JSngry Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 Dorky cover, great, GREAT playing. Definitely one of the most involving and interesting sides I've heard in the last few months. PRETTY ACCURATE AMG REVIEW Those who have been curious but reluctant about Bley for whatever reason(s), start here - the tunes are all familar, and the shit swings like a mofo. But it's still Bley all the way - lines and harmonies that weave in and out seamlessly and logically, with the net result being that, unless you listen REAL close, you're likely to think you heard something you didn't, one way or the other. And you'd not be to blame for that - Bley is a master musical illusionist. The guy's a trip, and in the best possible way. Bassist Jay Anderson is good, and drummer Adam Nussbaum sounds like he's having the time of his life. Those who already dig Bley, well, you'll either already have this one, or will pick it up when you find it. I found it (used) last weekend at a Hastings in Longview, Tx for $4.99. The ghost of Treasure City lives! As for those who don't dig Bley at all (and have heard him playing in a setting such as this), hey - why are you reading this thread? In all seriousness - check it out! Quote
Nate Dorward Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 Actually I've never seen a handsome SteepleChase cover.... But Bley's terrific. Haven't heard this one but the Bebop album on the same label is tremendous stuff... SteepleChase seem to get him into more "mainstream"ish situtations than the more abstract stuff on say ECM--nice to hear him do standards. Quote
JohnS Posted September 13, 2004 Report Posted September 13, 2004 A great Bley album. All of his Steeplechase recordings are worthy of recommendation. No one has quite the same touch or gets the same sound from the piano. Quote
Simon8 Posted August 13, 2014 Report Posted August 13, 2014 (a 10 years) bump Finally got around to hearing this and indeed a superlative, inspired, plain ol' (and new) fun record. "Reality Check", recorded a year later with Jay Anderson again and Victor Lewis on drums, is along the same great line. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 15, 2014 Report Posted August 15, 2014 Actually I've never seen a handsome SteepleChase cover.... yeah, me neither. They are all pretty lame. But the music is often sublime. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted August 16, 2014 Report Posted August 16, 2014 Funny, but I like most Steeplechase covers. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted August 17, 2014 Report Posted August 17, 2014 I just had chills. Hope you feel better, or go see a doctor. Quote

JSngry Posted August 17, 2014 Author Report Posted August 17, 2014 If it's more cost effective to see an Art Director, that might be the way to go. Doctors can get pricey in a hurry. Then again, you get what you pay for, which leads us right back to Steeplechase covers inducing various symptoms and such in random population samples of the population at random. Quote
Joe Posted August 17, 2014 Report Posted August 17, 2014 (edited) "Nils' no-frills chills," no doubt. Edited August 17, 2014 by Joe Quote
Peter Friedman Posted August 18, 2014 Report Posted August 18, 2014 I especially like the numerous Dexter Gordon covers on Steeplechase. Quote
