There is a Hat Hut LP with Marianne Schroeder playing Braxton & Stockhausen, a 4xCD box on Hat performed by Hildegaard Kleeb, and an 8xCD box set on Leo performed by Genevieve Fraccroulle. I think that's it.

I always rather see Braxton on reeds but I don't have a problem with his piano playing, which, like a good physician, "does no harm." In fact, like most of what he does, it has its idiosyncratic interest. I like his playing here:

Braxton as a piano composer is something else. I think his compositions are probably in advance of his playing.

Rzewski also has a recorded a "mix" of Compositions 30-33 for piano on his Finnadar album No Place to Go But Around. (I'm a long way from my record collection, and might be slightly off on the opus numbers.)

Rzewski, Oppens (on organ) and Braxton all appear together on one song on a Folkways LP. Otherwise, that's it. "For Two Pianos" is a good one.

I have the Schroeder and the Kleeb, and particularly like the Kleeb. It is fun to listen to the music while reading Braxton's Composition Notes. At least for me, it helps me to get inside of the experience, and it is quite enjoyable.

I have a few of the releases with Braxton playing piano, but I haven't pulled them out in years. I've never been able to get into them fully. Overall, I'm more of a fan of his '70s and '80s quartets, orchestra music, and solo work. I do enjoy some of the ghost trance work too.

At some point, I plan to re-subscribe to the Tri-Centric Foundation and download a few new releases. There is a boatload of interesting material there.

I've been wondering about that one too... i've been keeping an eye out for it; I check the Firehouse 12 site every now and again when i'm doing my bookmark rounds: they haven't released anything this year let alone the Braxton.

Does anyone have any opinions on this Ring Records release?

Creative Music Orchestra‎– RBN----3° K12 (Pour Orchestre) 3LP. Recorded 1972

I have a copy of it somewhere, but haven't listened to it in years. I recall it's entertaining enough, but much different from subsequent creative music orchestra works and more like a big band version of his earlier work with Leo Smith and Leroy Jenkins. At times, it sounds comparable to a Kagel or Stockhausen piece. For example, there's a passage for 100 balloons. Joachim Kuhn is on piano.

Intriguing, thanks

Can't remember which thread it came up in, but i mentioned a youtube video at Woodstock where Braxton sung/scatted a famous solo for Corea and Konitz... i slightly miss remembered it, but FWIW here's the video. The relevant part can be found around the 22:30 mark. I just love the expression on Corea's face, a mix of reverence and amusement and respect and enjoyment etc...

[upcoming album releases]
We are aiming to release three box sets in the fall of 2015, with advance purchase options for website members (more information coming soon).

  • Deluxe multi-media Trillium J box set containing live performance video on Blu-ray disc and studio recording on 4-CD set (New Braxton House Records).
  • 3 Compositions (EEMHM) 2011, first studio recording of Braxton's Echo Echo Mirror House Music as 3-CD set or surround sound Blu-ray disc from our partners at Firehouse 12 Records.
  • Quintet (Tristano) 2014, a 7-CD set of Braxton's interpretation of the complete music of Lennie Tristano and associated colleagues including Billy Bauer, Connie Crothers, Warne Marsh, Sal Mosca among others (New Braxton House Records).

So the new Echo Echo Mirror House set is a studio recording. That seems a new bit of information.
