JSngry Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Yeah, the organs weren't heavily used in jazz, at least not that I know of, but you'd see them all over the malls of America and such. Quote
Guy Berger Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 I dig the Rhodes immensely, and the Wurlitzer too. But the Wurlitzer didn't have as strong/fat/whatever sound and structure, so I don't think it held up as well to more "energetic" playing. But it was a soulful sounding little booger, yes it was. I think John Medeski uses a Wurlitzer. Or did. Guy Quote
mikeweil Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 Besides Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer, the German Hohner made an Electra Piano that had a very distinctiove sound and was widely used in Europe - was somewhat more affordable than a Rhodes over here, IIRC. Gordon Beck used to play one of these, got a beautiful sound from it. There is a Nucleus LP where he and Dave McRae on a Rhodes deliver great contrast and nice comparison of the two instruments. Guest akanalog Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 i think if george duke's MPS albums were more readily available (how about reissuing some of them instead of every freaking hans koller album!) more people would vote for him. his MPS work plus his work with zappa (most of the live performances i have heard from '73 include some long features for a ring modulated duke) makes him the champ for me. Jazz Kat Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 Zawinul. I like Weather Report to an extent. Except for that, I'm not into electric piano. I love Chick Corea, but prefer him on acoustic piano. Quote
marcello Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Have to vote for Chick. Was just listening to the Nov. 3 '69 "Masqualero", where he takes a five minutes solo -- yowza. Herbie and Joe come in 2nd and 3rd. There is a real nice cd of the "Lost Quintet" called: Title: IT'S ABOUT THAT TIME Date: July 1969 Release: Jazz Door #1294 That has some of the best Chick w/ Miles that I have heard. Quote
Big Al Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Bill Evans in general, but my favorite album with an electric piano is Hubert Laws In the Beginning, electric piano played by Bob James of all people. Quote
