Candoli Brothers--recommendations?

1959 Two for the Money Mercury

1962 There Is Nothing Like a Dame Warner Brothers

I've heard good things about Two for the Money... anybody here heard any of these LPs?

David, I found this one used earlier this year:

Not sure how easy it is to locate, but its an early 90s Chicago gig put out on the Hindsight label and it has the added attraction of John Young on piano. Nice disc, both brothers sound good.

I have a Japanese vinyl reissue of '2 For the Money'. Have not played that one in ages. I remember it as solid and unpretentious.

"Two Brothers" is excellent. I was there for that engagment. Conte is in typically fine form, and I'm pretty sure, without heard everything there is, that this is Pete's blowing date. He's got room to roam and sounds delighted to have it; his fairly personal take on vintage Gillespie comes through clearly (that was more or less his vintage too). Not too many guys around now play that way; actually not too many ever could and also sound like themselves. The rhythm section -- Young, Dan Shapera, and Wilbur Campbell -- is really on, hot yet relaxed. Some of the best, and best-recorded, Campbell there is.

I have to say that "Two Brothers" is only for Candoli fanatics. They are way past their prime. I'm in the process of building a Candoli collection, and have several CD's in transit. Right now, I'd recommend "Powerhouse Trumpet" and "Confirmation", The Chiz Harris Quartet. Both feature Conti (you're not going to find much with Pete alone). There is also Pete and Conti Candoli, "Fascinating Rhythm" which I have but have not checked out yet, and "Conti Candoli" (VSOP) which has Vince Guaraldi on piano and Stan Levey on drums. All of these should not be too hard to get.

Geez, I heard Conte in Chicago within a year of his death, and he sounded damn good -- and not only technically; he was playing and thinking HARD! Strange, though, by that time (as I think you can see from his cameo role in David Lynch's "Mullholland Dr.") Conte's long pointy nose and his prominent pointy chin had gotten to the point, so to speak, where they looked they were going to meet.

Perhaps it was Pete who was not at the top of his game, but there are definitely some rough spots in Two Brothers. I saw Conte in Los Angeles with Frank Rosolino in about 1975, and he was awesome.
