  1. Well, what can you say? DG was a wonderful player, easily in my top five, perhaps my top two tenors. He will give me many, many hours of intense enjoyment in the years to come, even though he has passed....
  2. Does he have a permit for that thing??? Man, I live in Texas. You can have a Sherman tank here without a permit.
  3. Goodman's SSS was certainly advanced for his genre, but unremarkable in the grand scheme of things. For me, the whole thing is ruined by Krupa. His playing, IMHO, is amaturish. I remember seeing a video where there was a 'battle of the bands' between Goodman and Chick Webb. Webb was a far better drummer.
  4. The Mobley Box is wonderful. I am in the enviable position of having just received the two new Selects and the JJ set, so I am temporarily Mosaic Satisfied.
  5. He is just too technical. He is a fantastic trumpet player, but doesn't seem to have much to say. However, he's worth a listen live.
  6. You will not regret it!! If you don't have the Stitt box, you need that one too. And the Gordon Select.
  7. July 15th- how about none other than Philly Joe Jones? Feel better now? ← Oh Thank You!! I feel way better! edit: here is a web site with some great pictures of PJJ. http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers/Philly_Joe_Jones.html
  8. That's a hell of a lot better than me. I share birthdays with Linda Ronstadt (July 15). Someone help me out here.
  9. Mehldau is a wonderful player IMO, but I do think you only need a half dozen or so CD's to get the idea. I like his solo stuff better than the trios.
  10. The great Milt Hinton played with Cab Calloway for thirteen years, I think. On the other hand, this was only a small part of his fabulous 60 year career.
  11. I am alternating between the Eldridge and Mobley Mosaics. Jeeze, the Eldridge/Dizzy stuff is just amazing. Roy is up to the task for sure.
  12. Just remember, a good speaker has about 3% total harmonic distortion. Any big fat wire is indistinguishable from a $2000 cable.
  13. The greatest discovery in jazz is the one you make tomorrow. Maybe it's Milt Hinton or Don Ellis or Dave Douglas-- whatever gets you excited. That's the greatest.
  14. I heard Bud Shank and Paul Horn a number in times in the late '60 in Los Angeles. It's good to know they can still blow.
  15. What happens if this desert island doesn't have an electrical outlet?
  16. I refuse to vote. Why does one recording have to be "better" than another? They are both great, and both essential.
  17. I might go just to see how he can simle and play at at same time.
  18. Gee, you make that sound bad. ← Might be your "issue" not mine. ← Or the other way around.... I'm don't think we're arguing here, but if we are, please let me know. I will buy the Rogers Proper Box, if for no other reason that I never saw him live, but grew up around west coast jazz. Let me know if there is anything wrong with that. You can clearly see from my avatar where I stand on trumpet players. If I had to go with one, it would be Diz, but there's another 10-15 players that I love and collect. I couldn't even tell you if Rogers would make that list. Maybe, perhaps not.
  19. Gee, you make that sound bad. He's worth listening to, IMO, but even though I am very partial to jazz trumpet, there are many, many other players I like better.
  20. Rogers was certainly not a great technician, but for me, when someone mentions "cool west coast jazz" I think of him. He really did swing in a low-keyed manner. I prefer west coast players like the Candoli brothers and Frank Rosolino, but I like Shorty too.
  21. I have seen those 98 episodes many times.
  22. I hope they reissue many of their sold out boxes. That might PO a lot of people, but most of them would be e-bayers. How better to promote jazz than to re-release those classic collections?
  23. Get the "Live at Monterey" CD. It is deadly serious jazz (unlike some of the later work) and much of the improvisation in these odd time signatures is just remarkable. One warning- the sound quality is not great (but not terrible either).
