Brownian Motion Posted February 20, 2005 Report Posted February 20, 2005 I've always liked the standard "I Won't Dance", music by Jerome Kern. Django Reinhart and Art Tatum recorded it, but give the quality of the melody and the tricky bridge I'm surprised more musicians haven't tackled it. Others? Quote

Dan Gould Posted February 21, 2005 Report Posted February 21, 2005 (edited) I dont know, they were never recorded. Yeah, this seems like an odd category: the music has to be played and recorded by lots of people to become a standard in the first place, doesn't it? "I Won't Dance" was recorded on one of the Ella & Louis collaborations, btw. "I Should Care" is a personal favorite, I don't think its been over-recorded, though. Mobley's version is definitive, for me. Edited February 21, 2005 by Dan Gould Quote
Brownian Motion Posted February 21, 2005 Author Report Posted February 21, 2005 It's true that it needs to be played, but it doesn't necessarily need to be played by jazz musicians to achieve standard-hood[!]. But maybe we should amend the thread title to "Songs That Should Have Become Jazz Standards But Didn't". Quote

You would say I Hear A Rhapsody is a standard right? Of course. But is it recorded as much as My Funny Valentine? No. I got you. I was just playing, you dont have to change no title. Quote

cannonball-addict Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 I second the motion on Dan Gould's pick, "I Should Care." Also: What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life (Legrand-Bergman/Bergman) Takin' a Chance on Love (Vernon Duke) Have You Met Miss Jones (under-recorded these days) When Lights Are Low songs from Porgy & Bess that are not "Summertime" Squeeze Me Quote

ghost of miles Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do." Sinatra does a nice version on the Columbia box, and somebody contemporary--Tierney Sutton, I think--has a very good interpretation out. Haven't AMG'd it, but it's not one I've heard played/sung into the ground. (Not on the Ella BERLIN SONGBOOK set, which doesn't surprise me; I can't really imagine hearing her do this.) Quote
Soul Stream Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 A song I love that I don't hear a lot of is "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most." Quote
