ghost of miles Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 On the Songbirds newsgroup someone made mention of a forthcoming Bear Family Nat King Cole box, devoted to the 1955-65 Capitol recordings. Anybody else hear of this yet? I know it would be much more pop-oriented than the Mosaic box, but I think I'd be mighty tempted to get it at some point... Quote
jazzbo Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 I'm just going to pretend I never heard about the possibility of this. . .. Quote
Dave James Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 I have all four of the Bear Family Dean Martin boxes and one they did on Zarah Leander, the Swedish singer/actress who took Marlene Dietrich's place in the German entertainment heirarchy after Dietrich emigrated to the U.S. Those folks do a very nice job. I'm with you, Ghost, a Cole BF box would be tempting, depending on how far it strays from the Mosaic. Up over and out. Quote
ghost of miles Posted March 17, 2005 Author Report Posted March 17, 2005 I don't know how much overlap there'd be, Dave--don't have my Cole box booklet with me, but assuming the BF box is complete, what does that encompass? The MIDNIGHT sessions and... PENTHOUSE? I'm a bit dusty on my Nat discographical info, but in any case, yeah, I'll definitely be snagging this Bear Family box if it truly comes to pass. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 There wouldn't necessarily be that much overlap between the Mosaic and the BF. What bugs me is how much of this I have on other Capitol cds. . . a LOT . . . a BIG LOT! I'd be tempted by the BF set but better served hanging tight with what I have. Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 18, 2006 Author Report Posted January 18, 2006 UPDATE!! UPDATE!! Posted to Yahoo Songbirds last night: Today I spoke with our Bear Family distributor for the Austin/Central Texas area. He mentioned that the Nat King Cole box set would be out in March. He was almost certain that the set will include all of his solo recordings on 11 CDs. The added book counts for an additional 3 CDs of cost. So the total will be around $280. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 18, 2006 Report Posted January 18, 2006 I'm still pretending that I haven't heard about this set, so I didn't see this cover image and page on the Bear Family site. . . . http://www.bear-family.de/index_english.htm Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 18, 2006 Author Report Posted January 18, 2006 Does that say 1955-1959? Actually, I have more of that material than I do of the early 1960s stuff... perhaps they're going to do a sequel as well? Quote
jazzbo Posted January 18, 2006 Report Posted January 18, 2006 That was my guess as well. . . . would make sense to do that as there are easily more than twenty cds total. . . . Quote
mikeweil Posted January 18, 2006 Report Posted January 18, 2006 (edited) The Bear Family website says Vol. 1, 1955-1959 ...... 11 CDs ...... Edited January 18, 2006 by mikeweil Quote

Guest Chaney Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 I'll guess that Deep Discount CD will offer this set for just under $200. Maybe $190-ish? Quote
Jim R Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 I love Nat- even a lot of his later recordings, but... I'd never buy this. Too much filler, too many song titles that make me go Like a lot of boxed sets, it's just too much, IMO (like some other boxed sets I've bought ). I have a few individual reissues and compilations of this stuff, as well as a Capitol 4-disc set (with booklet) that came out in 1992, and it's all good, almost no throwaway cuts. I can do without things like "When Rock and Roll Come to Trinidad", "Coo Coo Roo Coo Coo Paloma", etc., especially at ~$19 per disc. I was recently lusting over BF's "Blowing The Fuse" R&B series, but where I saw them, they were $24 per disc. I know BF does nice work, but... Still don't own any BF's... Quote

jazzbo Posted March 7, 2006 Report Posted March 7, 2006 I own some Bear Family sets. . . it's a great service they do for artists like Nellie Lutcher and Ella Mae Morse who I love but whose catalogs are neglected by the owners. I'd buy this set if I was rich, just to have all that Nat stuff; I suspect I would like some of those novelty songs more than Jim. . . . But I'm not rich enough to get this one! I'd probably buy that Nashville r and b box before this one. . . . Quote
ghost of miles Posted March 7, 2006 Author Report Posted March 7, 2006 Lon, both of those Nashville boxes are great. The r & b one, in particular, has some interesting jazz crossover tracks featuring a young Phineas Newborn Jr., the alleged Coltrane tracks with Gay Crosse, etc. I've been reading the not-so-great Cole bio that came out about six years ago and re-visiting the Mosaic... I don't have as much of the 1955-59 material as I thought I did, so I will definitely be going for this new BF collection. I think my friend's new record store can pretty much match the CD Wolf price (sans shipping), so I'll be getting it locally. I hope BF does a sequel, though I hear rumors that the Cole family/estate is not too keen about some of those recordings seeing the light of day again. Quote
Guest Posted March 7, 2006 Report Posted March 7, 2006 There will be another box covering the 60s, but I'm curious to know what recordings the estate does not want issued. Any ideas? Quote

Pretty much hearsay, but a DJ friend of mine who writes liner notes says that they are none too happy about "Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer," for starters. I don't know enough about estates and publishing to have an idea of what kind of sway the Cole folks could hold over what BF does... and much of that 1960s material has come out already on the British EMI twofers, hasn't it? In any event, glad if there's solid word that there will be a sequel... I love quite a lot of that material myself, favoring both the "jazzy" Nat and the "popular/EZ" Nat (and all points in-between). Very interesting. I do know that the family has the last word here, but I'd very surprised if they threw a wrench into it at this point. Funny you mention "Lazy-Hazy-Crazy" because that was, as you mention, recently issued on a twofer and appears on compilations all the time. And while much of what Nat did during this period has those sorts of elements to it (Ramblin Rose etc), those were also his biggest sellers and most know him for that rather than, say, "The Touch of Your Lips."
