pasta Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I literally CANNOT get enough of this stuff on precious vinyl!!!! Mostly second stringers getting to be leaders for a change, but lots of hot playing, with some solid originals amongst the standards on almost all of them.................cool graphics, etc.............Awesome period for Jazz in my opinion..........a little out, real fusion-esque without the later sacharrin trappings! Chuck Nessa Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Shitload of 6 hr sessions here - budget dates without many chances for second takes. Best deal those guys could get at the time and they did the best they could - 'cept for rehearsals at their own expense. Paycheck time. Quote
JSngry Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Your list does not include Hadley Calliman's IAPETUS, so I assume that you have not yet come across it. You need to! Quote
pasta Posted March 22, 2005 Author Report Posted March 22, 2005 Chuck- Do you have any information on these sessions? I would love to hear it all, sir! I have read remarks similar to yours, plus some of the guys got stiffed on $$$ as well apparently? Give! ;-) JSngry- Not yet, but it will be MINE one day! Wow, a new poster like myself getting the attention of the heavyweights on the board! I certainly appreciate the responses, and from all my lurking, you gents are the people in the know for sure. Right now I am spinning the Caliman debut LP! AWESOME STUFF! pasta Quote
JSngry Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 We ain't heavyweights, we're just big-boned. Yeah, that first Calliman is some cool shit, but IAPETUS is another thing entirely. Not at all like that first one. Actually, there's nothing else quite like it by anybody, ever, not really. But Chuck's points are also well-taken. CRANKIN' for instance, could have been a much better record than it was with some better preparation and supervison. And that's not the only example. Still, it's definitely a catalog not without items of interest. Chuck disagrees with me on this, I believe, but what with us both being big-boned and all, we WILL survive. Quote
pasta Posted March 22, 2005 Author Report Posted March 22, 2005 Now Ive GOT to grab that Caliman!!!!! Quote
JSngry Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Yep. Good luck, though. From what I understand, it's a bit of a "cult classic". Quote
Big Wheel Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 I'm fond of one of those Galper records, either GUERILLA BAND or WILDBIRD (can never remember which). Damned funky stuff. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Did pasta just say we were all fat? Quote
pasta Posted March 22, 2005 Author Report Posted March 22, 2005 Jazzmoose- No, man, not fat, HEAVY, as in these cats are HEAVY, ALL the way around!!!!!! Quote
Jazz Kat Posted March 23, 2005 Report Posted March 23, 2005 Someone said jazz died in the 70's. idk, some of my favorite sessions were done in that decade. Quote
catesta Posted March 23, 2005 Report Posted March 23, 2005 Jazzmoose- No, man, not fat, HEAVY, as in these cats are HEAVY, ALL the way around!!!!!! In other words, fat! Are you trying to cause trouble, wise ass? Jazzmoose, is this the dude that used to post using the handle "macaroni"? Quote

AllenLowe Posted March 23, 2005 Report Posted March 23, 2005 "We had a three LP deal with Bob Shad of Mainstream. However we were signed to his son-in-law Maury Apatow as our manager" - from a 60s rock group web site - classic Shad - Quote
Daniel A Posted March 23, 2005 Report Posted March 23, 2005 Someone said jazz died in the 70's. In my opinion, jazz was never less alive than in 1987. Quote
