Alexander Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 The school at which I am doing my student teaching was locked down yesterday afternoon when a suspicious package was found in a boys' bathroom. The package proved to be a crude explosive device (mostly smoke bombs). Even worse, the student responsible turned out to be a kid in my 2nd period class! Jesus! Student Bomber Quote
jazzbo Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 Alexander, so happy that this was detected when it was! Quote
Big Wheel Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 (edited) Glad you're ok. Clearly the kid needs to be dealt with seriously, but this sentence from the article sure did strike me as dumb: "This is a very serious, unforgiving act by someone who was hell bent, obviously, on obstructing the school process." You know we've reached a new low in bureaucratic language when "learning" becomes "the school process." Edited April 5, 2005 by Big Wheel Quote
JSngry Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 Or when sociopathic behavior can only be described in terms of a process of mere "obstruction"... Glad you're ok, dude. Quote
Dan Gould Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 I was going to make a comment about "Alex the bomb-thrower" but that really isn't necessary. B-) Definitely agree with the comments about language, though. Quote
catesta Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 Crazy. There was a time when something like this would have been considered a prank whether or not it was meant to be. This kid really fucked up. Quote
Big Wheel Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 Crazy. There was a time when something like this would have been considered a prank whether or not it was meant to be. Very true, and it wasn't even that long ago. Didn't one of the very early Simpsons episodes feature Bart throwing a cherry bomb down the john? Quote
Alexander Posted April 5, 2005 Author Report Posted April 5, 2005 Part of me feels bad that this kid's life is completely fucked at 16. I mean, this was a stupid thing to do, no question. And he has to face the consequences of his actions. But ten years ago something like this would be grounds for suspension for the rest of the year. Maybe even expulsion. But this kid is looking at a felony offense. He's looking at jail time. And trust me, this kid isn't going to survive in jail. I just hope they send him to juvey (although those kids can be pretty rough too). Now I'm going to say all the things people usually say at times like this: He was a loner. Really kept to himself. Didn't say much in class... Quote
jazzbo Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 I feel sorry for him too. I know it's not a happy, or a wild and crazy guy, that does this. . . . And I can guess what type of life he just gave himself. Quote
7/4 Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 Students were confined to their classrooms for over two hours as bomb-sniffing dogs patrolled the hallways. That's real fucking bright. Don't evacuate the building, have people sit there while they look for a bomb. The idiot who made this choice should be fired. Quote

The news article mentions federal charges, which may be really bad -- because I think the judges have a lot fewer options for (and a lot loss experience with) charging juveniles as juveniles. Quote

Jazzmoose Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 Wow. Smoke bombs get you time in Club Fed now? All I'll say is I'm thankful they weren't that strict when I was in the sixth grade... Quote

Jazz Kat Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 (edited) Well I assume they wanted to remove it from the building. Edited April 6, 2005 by Jazz Kat Quote
