brownie
Bought this some time ago and forgot about it! http://www.fantasyjazz.com/catalog/sandole_bros_cat.html Listened to it over the weekend and was stunned! This is really superb music with intelligent compositions and lively arrangements. The Philadelphia brothers assembled an octet of worthy musicians, including Art Farmer, John LaPorta, George Barrow among others. Whatever happened to them after they released this album? Looks like this was the only album they recorded. Is that really the only one? The Fantasy reissue also includes four sides by John LaPorta (with Jack Keller on piano and Clem De Rosa on drums, no bass). Outstanding too... One to get before the Fantasy/Concorde takeover lets this disappear once more!

brownie
Thanks Jim (and Hans, too!). Is that Sandole Project as good as the Fantasy album? Found this on Dennis Sandole: http://elvispelvis.com/dennissandole.htm I now know where he has been all these years. And now, where have I been all this time without knowing about him
sidewinder
Wow! This one was news to me. Was that album with LaPorta and co. originally done for Debut or for some other label? Interesting to read that he taught Pat Martino in his early years.
AllenLowe
is that Sandole project available? Is Sandole on it? More info, please...
Michael Fitzgerald
Not Debut, Fantasy - LaPorta had several albums for them in 1956-57. Mike Edited May 8, 2005 by Michael Fitzgerald
JSngry
Is that Sandole Project as good as the Fantasy album? I've just gotten ahold of it. I'll let you know after I check it out.
JSngry
Listened to it last night. It's a compilation of sorts - a Sandole 4tet date from 1958, a long "jazz opera/ballet" or something like that performed by some kind of workshop orchestra from the 70s, and one each solo piano and quartet readings of two of his tunes from the 1980s. The 80s quartet is a gorgeous ballad, and John Stubblefield plays on it. Sandole himself only plays on the 1958 stuff (Wendell Marshall is on bass, btw), and its fascinating in a Gil Melle-meets Lennie Tristano kind of way. Kinda sounds like music of ants scurrying around in panicked yet dutiful circles, which I know doesn't sound like much of a compliment, but, honestly, it's meant to be one. If you like the Fantasy album, you'll probably like this one just as much, but in a totally different way.
JSngry
is that Sandole project available? Is Sandole on it? More info, please... I got a burn of the CJR (Cadence Jazz Records) LP from a friend. Don't know if they still have any in stock, but Slim would.

Sounds good to me. I need to listen to those panicked ants! Will be on the lookout for that album even if it's not on the Cadence lists!
