Chuck Nessa Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 (edited) I talked to Tom about this earlier in the year but here is the deal. Ann and I will arrive in KC late Friday. We are there for a nephew's wedding on Saturday. Anyone available for drinks or other stuff on Fri nite or early on Sat, get in touch via email to cnessa@earthlink.net . We will be staying at the Hotel Phillips. Once again, sorry about the short notice. Until about 9:00 tonight I thought we would be dealing with my 88 year old father and his health problems. He called and said he wasn't going, so............ Edited June 9, 2005 by Chuck Nessa Quote
Free For All Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 Well, have a safe trip. The weather here has been crazy lately. I'm working Friday night, but I'd love to see y'all. If not, I hope you have a great time. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 (edited) FYI, Greg Tardy is playing down at The Blue Room at 18th & Vine on Friday Night, with Helen Sung in the band. Last time I saw the both of them, it was one of THE best nights of jazz I'd heard in this town within the previous year or two. Tardy is Andrew Hill's "first call" tenor player, and a hell of a player at that. He played with Hill the one time I saw him (Hill) up in Iowa a couple years ago, and played his ass off. I'll e-mail Chuck shortly with this same message. Suggest we all catch up with each other Friday night (June 11th) at The Blue Room. Friday shows usually start at 8:30pm, and runs until Midnight or 12:30am. Should make for a wonderful night. ($10 cover, with no drink minimum.) If anybody needs to contact me between now and Friday, feel free to give me a call. Here's my number, day or evening --> (816) - 931-6415. (Hopefully I'll remember to edit the number out of this message after Friday night.) My wife is flying in from being out of town for work this week, but I should be able to hook up with people at the Blue Room by 9pm at the latest (knock on wood). By the way, Spontoonious (Joe) and I are having lunch tomorrow, and hopefully he'll be available to join us as well. Paul, you got a decent gig on Friday?? Maybe we could make a mini-pub-crawl of the night, between Tardy's gig and yours. Where you playin' at?? - if it's local. Maybe we can also suggest Chuck bring a handful of his new Diz & Bird discs with him, you know, so we can spare the U.S. postal service of some unnecessary business. Free For All Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 (edited) My gig is early in the evening, and probably wouldn't be of much interest to you guys- mostly backing up a singer. Perhaps I'll catch up to you at the Blue Room. If someone has a cell number, email it to me. Otherwise, have a good hang fellas! If Chuck brings any copies of the Bird/Diz CD someone please snag me one! Edited June 9, 2005 by Free For All Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 (edited) A group could certainly get together on Saturday too, if that doesn't tax Chuck too much. Or perhaps Saturday would be preferable (over Friday) for other reasons. I didn't mean to hijack things to a Friday night decision. Just saw that Tardy was in town, and my mind started racing. ( ) Who has a good Saturday suggestion?? My house is a disaster, as my wife and I are remodelling our kitchen (and half our kitchen has drifted out into our dining room and is starting to encroach on the living room even). In other words, she'd kill me if I had guests over in the state it's in. Any good breakfast hangs?? "First Watch" in Westport is always good, but I'm sure there are better suggestions lurking out there. I never go out for breakfast, so I'm at a loss. ("The Corner" in Westport is overrated in my book, by my mother always loved it - so what do I know.) How late are you playing Friday night, Paul?? Maybe you can catch Tardy's last set. Free For All Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 (edited) Classic Cup, baby. It rocks. A Saturday morning breakfast hang would be hapnin'. Edited June 9, 2005 by Free For All Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 Then both suggestions are officially on the table, and both would be great!! If Chuck e-mails or calls me (I just e-mailed him my earlier post above), I'll suggest both to him, and see what his schedule allows. Quote
Spontooneous Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 And I have to be out of town both nights. Dang. Drat. Crud. Quote
Eric Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 I could do the Classic Cup on Sat am ... probably the best time for me. Quote
Free For All Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 I'm not 100% sure yet, but that will be my best shot. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted June 9, 2005 Author Report Posted June 9, 2005 I'll be back here later in the day when our schedule is firmer. The only instruction I have from Ann is "We have to do ribs sometime". She's still clinging to memories of Bryant's in the late '70s. Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted June 9, 2005 Author Report Posted June 9, 2005 OK, here's the deal as I know it. We leave when I send this. We plan on arriving late afternoon - rehearsal dinner early evening - some place called Brio. Then - If we are not "dead" plan on checking out the Blue Room. We will check in with Tom during the day to see if that still flies. A late breakfast/brunch sounds great too - the wedding isn't 'til 6:00 Sat nite so we have some "wiggle room". Hope to see y'all. Free For All Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 Chuck, Rooster and Eric: Sounds like a breakfast hang might be in order- Classic Cup on the plaza serves b-fast until 10:30 Saturday AM- maybe we could shoot for 10? Sound like a plan guys? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 How I wish I still lived in the KC area. Have fun, guys! Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 Wish I could join you guys as well. Quote

Free For All Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 Eric's in. I'm in. Waiting to hear from Chuck and Tom. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 (edited) Eric's in. I'm in. Waiting to hear from Chuck and Tom. ← It's lookin' like I may not be able to join you guys for breakfast. My Saturday is a little packed (an all-afternoon planning meeting for a not-for-profit symphony board I serve on), and my morning is lookin' busy too. Still may sneak it in, though, if I get the chance. Paul and Eric, can either or both you guys PM me with your phone numbers (Paul I have yours somewhere, but lord only knows where). That way I can give them to Chuck if he calls, though I expect to see him tonight at The Blue Room. I'll also print out a map for Chuck to get to Classic Cup, and give it to him tonight. That's the place on 47th Street (301 W. 47th, to be exact -- just looked it up on-line), down on the Plaza, right?? Haven't been there in ages. Only asking cuz there used to be another Classic Cup in Westport back in the late 90's, so I wanna make sure there isn't some third location that I'm just not aware of. Edit: Just saw you said "on the Plaza" in a post above, Paul - so that clears that up. Thanks!! Edited June 10, 2005 by Rooster_Ties Quote

Rooster_Ties Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 (edited) FYI, Chuck made it to KC safe and sound, and he called me with his cell-phone number. I've PM-ed it to Paul (and Eric too!!), and I guess the plan is to meet Chuck and his wife around 10am or so at The Classic Cup on The Plaza. I'll have a map tonight for Chuck of where the Classic Cup is (since I should see him tonight at the Blue Room). If any other KC people are available, Chuck and I will be at the Blue Room starting sometime between 9pm and 10pm. I'm still workin' on being at the breakfast hang too, but it may not be in the cards. PS: If Chuck indicates a slightly later (or earlier) preferred time for breakfast, I'll report than in this thread late tonight. His phone message this afternoon said he was up for both tonight, and tomorrow - so I think we have a plan. Edited June 11, 2005 by Rooster_Ties Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 Well, the good news is that I'm officially "in" for breakfast tomorrow. (Yeah!!) See you guys around 10am, plus or minus. The bad news is that I fucked up, and Greg Tardy is paying at the Blue Room TOMORROW night (as in SATURDAY night), NOT tonight. I got down there tonight around 9:50pm, and they were still between sets. Hung around until the band took the stage, and whoa -- wrong band!! Didn't see Chuck yet, so I hightailed it out of there to try to catch him on his cellphone and give him the heads-up about Tardy not being there tonight. By the time I got home and on the phone, he had gotten to the club, and had already settled in. Oh well, shit happens. Maybe we can all get together tomorrow night instead, and catch Tardy and Helen Sung after all. (Paul, you got a gig??) Last time I saw them, it was a hell of a night to remember. Sung -- I kid you not -- was nearly every bit as good as Mulgrew Miller. I drive an hour to hear her, maybe two. Anyway, I hope Chuck doesn't mind what's playing down there too much -- it's Gerald Dunn's regular group. Nothing as special as Greg Tardy, but not half bad either. See you guys in the morning, 'round 10. Chuck's got my home phone number, and he has the address of the place -- which shouldn't be too hard to find. Cheers!! -- Tom Quote
Free For All Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 Glad you're making it to the breakfast hang Tom! Thanks for all of your orginizational efforts. So you left the club, drove home and called Chuck from there and he was already at the club? You need a cell phone, dude. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 You need a cell phone, dude. ← We've got one!! I just didn't have it on me, cuz my wife usually is the one who carries it. Blue Room used to have a pay phone, but they must've taken it out just within the last couple months -- or so I discovered last night. See you guys in about an hour!! Quote
