Big Al Posted July 4, 2005 Report Posted July 4, 2005 As far as K2's go, I've had Benny Carter's JAZZ GIANT and Milt Jackson/Wes Montgomery's BAGS MEETS WES, but didn't have anything (like prior issues) to compare them to. Also got Blakey's UGETSU, but for some reason that one didn't sound that much better than the OJC (and the OJC sounded horrible to these ears). Then I picked up the Getz/Tjader Sextet SACD. Oh.... my..... WOW!!! As fantastic as this sounds, the real improvement is how the mixer got the sound of Eddie Duran's guitar to sound so prominent; very important when you consider how important his sound was to that group/album. So then this weekend, I picked up Bill Evans WALTZ FOR DEBBY (K2), after having had the OJC all this time. Again, WOW!!! Talk about feeling like you're there! Lafaro's bass and Motian's drums (hell, even Evans' piano) sound so much more prominent, where the OJC made it sound like you were listening from the back of the room! As a result, I went apeshit over at yourmusic and picked up: Bill Evans PORTRAIT IN JAZZ (SACD) Bill Evans SUNDAY AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD (K2) Wes Montgomery THE INCREDIBLE JAZZ GUITAR (SACD) May go back for more later! Wow! Still can't get over how fantastic these sound! Quote
J.A.W. Posted July 4, 2005 Report Posted July 4, 2005 The Analogue Productions hybrid SACDs of Bill Evans' Waltz for Debby (CAPJ-9399) and Sunday at the Village Vanguard (CAPJ-9376) sound much better than the K2s. They're expensive, but very highly recommended! Quote
Big Al Posted July 4, 2005 Author Report Posted July 4, 2005 I oughta check 'em out! Are they available thru Amazon? Also, are they hybrid or single-layer? I may never get a SACD player, but you never know! Drat! I should've checked Ultimate Electronics while they were having their Going Out Of Business sale. Ah well, c'est la vie! Quote
Big Al Posted July 4, 2005 Author Report Posted July 4, 2005 Just checked out Amazon and answered both questions. GEEZ!!!! Why do I keep doing this to myself? Quote

Drat! I should've checked Ultimate Electronics while they were having their Going Out Of Business sale. Ah well, c'est la vie! ← They're hybrids (see my earlier post). They're available from CDUniverse and CDConnection and a few other stores, but CDConnection's statement that they're single-layered is wrong - I've got them, and I can assure you they're hybrids! Waltz for Debby at CDUniverse Sunday at the Village Vanguard at CDUniverse CDConnection Quote
J.A.W. Posted July 4, 2005 Report Posted July 4, 2005 According to CDUniverse Sunday... is a single-layered SACD, but that's also wrong, it's a hybrid. Quote
Big Al Posted July 4, 2005 Author Report Posted July 4, 2005 Yup, sorry I missed that in your first post (still pretty early on this side of the pond!). I checked out the Analogue Production website. VERY bad idea! I see that may favorite Bill Evans album--MOON BEAMS--is available as an Analogue hybrid SACD. Man, if they ever release its companion HOW MY HEART SINGS in that format...... hey, I can go without food for a few days, right? (My gut says I can afford to!) Quote

mikeweil Posted July 4, 2005 Report Posted July 4, 2005 SACD Net is a relieable source of info on SACDs, whether there are hybrid or not etc. Complete with links to selected retailers. Quote
Big Al Posted July 4, 2005 Author Report Posted July 4, 2005 I think I'll go to Circuit City and surreptitiously slip in my Getz/Tjader disc and pretend nothing's happening..... Quote
Stefan Wood Posted July 4, 2005 Report Posted July 4, 2005 (edited) Look for that Gil Evans SACD while you're at it. In stereo for the first time and a good album! Edited July 4, 2005 by Stefan Wood Quote

Big Al Posted July 4, 2005 Author Report Posted July 4, 2005 Y'know, the stupid this is I saw that one used for $15 and I didn't snag it. You'd think I'd learn after all these years..... [boy do we need a DUNCE CAP smilie around here!] Quote
Ron S Posted July 4, 2005 Report Posted July 4, 2005 I wonder if they'll issue any more? ← If you don't know, then who does??? (Other than perhaps Norman Lear) Quote

mikeweil Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 Concord has been re-releasing titles from their back catalog on SACD - no reason for them to stop. And like Fantasy, they also leased to other SACD labels. Quote
Clunky Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 are these hybrids generally preferrable to the XRCD K2 discs ?, I'm interested in the Coltrane Prestige titles. I don't have any of these in any format nor do have or intent to get a SACD player. Quote
Claude Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 Concord has been re-releasing titles from their back catalog on SACD - no reason for them to stop. ← But they haven't done SACD reissues for quite some time now. http://www.sa-cd.net/alltitles/131 Quote
sal Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 Fantasy's is my favorite re-issue program of them all. The K2's and the SACD consistantly sound great and come wth great packaging. My favorite K2s are the ones of the Bill Evans trio at the Vanguard. WOW!!!! Quote
