Brad Posted August 18, 2005 Report Posted August 18, 2005 I've never checked this place out but took a look at their web site so what is it exactly? Do you get to buy any cd for $5.99 or do you only get the one in your queue for tha price and how's their inventory on jazz? Quote

Tjazz Posted August 18, 2005 Report Posted August 18, 2005 They have jazz RVG blue notes and some of the latest Verve digipacks re-issues. Also several box sets. You can search the jazz section. If you're buying single CDs, you might want to just enroll in BMG. Slightly cheaper, but you have to watch out for the automatic shipments. (the enrollment deal only) Quote
GA Russell Posted August 18, 2005 Report Posted August 18, 2005 You get to buy as many or as few as you want, so long as you get at least one per month, and you can quit any time you like. Quote
Ron S Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 And, in case this hasn't already been made clear, you can buy your "nonqueue" CD's any time you want, not just as part of a monthly queue purchase. And all CD's--including those in box sets--are always $5.99 each, with free shipping (and no sales tax in many states--unfortunately not including PA). So, for example, I got the Verve 16-disc Ella Fitzgerald Songbook box from them for $95.84 (16 x $5.99). Definitely a consistently great deal for the titles they carry. Quote
Guy Berger Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 If you're buying single CDs, you might want to just enroll in BMG. Slightly cheaper, but you have to watch out for the automatic shipments. (the enrollment deal only) I disagree-- unless you make large BMG orders, yourmusic is generaly cheaper. Guy Quote

I had been a BMG customer for about 10 years and dumped them. Quote
Aggie87 Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 I don't really buy from BMG anymore, but am still a member. I find searching their online catalog to be easier than searching through yourmusic's. That said, I don't have to be a member to do that, I suppose! But I don't get the automatic shipments, or have to send in the reply cards, so there's really no harm in remaining a member. Actually, every once in a while BMG offers a sale that ends up being better than yourmusic's, usually when it's the free shipping offer and you're buying a discounted box set... Quote

Brad Posted August 19, 2005 Author Report Posted August 19, 2005 Guess I'll have to sign up. Don't know how they can afford to do it. Either that or there's one hell of a markup at retail. Quote
jazzbo Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 What? In general retail (of any sort) only marks up 250% or more. . . Quote

Ed S Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 I have found used yourmusic.com since the $4.99 days and have not been disappointed. I'm still waiting for them to add some of the more recent BN stuff like Blanchard and Charlap, but in the meanwhile have picked up a lot of nice stuff. My last queue selection was the latest Kurt Rosenwinkel - outstanding. I've also picked up some stuff that I would not otherwise buy and some things that fall into the oldies category - like Rare Earth, some CCR. Over all I like it FAR better than BMG because there are none of those confounded monthly reply cards, the shipping is built right into the price and I don't have to get headaches figuring whether the buy 1 get two free deal is better than the buy one get unlimited at $2.99 depending on how many I buy, then figuring the shipping......... robviti Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 after seeing this thread, i thought to myself: "better late then never. maybe i should join now." after reviewing my want list and browsing through the jazz section, i remembered why i never joined in the first place - their selection sucks! of course, this is a totally subjective view based solely on my particular wants/needs. i'm sure others have found some great discs. but there's no vincent herring, frank rosolino, roland hanna, leroy vinnegar, or jeremy pelt. and only one title each for giants like sonny stitt and art pepper, and only two or three for the likes of jackie mclean, andrew hill, and clifford brown. like bmg, it looks like this just ain't the place for me. Quote
jazzbo Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 Well, as I have almost all I need of all those listed, I now use yourmusic.com to get new releases cheaply, and for classical and blues and soul titles of which there are many listed that I don't have and might want. . . . Quote
Aggie87 Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 I agree with Lon - it's a place to augment your other purchasing methods, not necessarily an amazon.com or anything, with a super inventory. They do tend to get a bit of the new releases & reissues, albeit a couple months after they're released. But if it's stuff you don't have to have the first day, it can be worth the wait at $5.99. Quote
GA Russell Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 their selection sucks! ← You're right, of course. That's why I don't think of it as a place to go shopping for what I want. I think of it as a place that offers stuff really cheap, so I browse to see if they have anything I might try on a flyer. Quote
GA Russell Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 Don't know how they can afford to do it. ← The record clubs (I guess there is only one left now) have special contracts with the record companies, which have special provisions in their contracts with the artists. For example, the artists receive only one half the usual royalty on records sold by the record clubs. Some artists, such as The Beatles, refuse to allow their records to be sold by the record clubs, because they refuse to agree to the special terms, such as the lower royalty. Quote
Brad Posted August 20, 2005 Author Report Posted August 20, 2005 Getting the RVGs is probably worth it although those are not bad already and if they have any inventory of OJCs, then that can't be bad. Quote
