Any guesses to what would have been the best jazz selling album for these lables? I just selected 11 lables.

My guesses for some are below. Not sure for all. But I would say coltrane has 3.

1. Savoy- (I would say something by Charlie Parker)

2. Prestige- ?

3. Riverside- ?

4. Argo- But Not for Me

5. Milestones- ?

6. Blue Note- Blue Train

7. Pablo- ?

8. Impulse- Love Supreme

9. Columbia- Time out or 'Round about Midnight

10. Atlantic- Giant Steps

11. Verve- (I would say something by Charlie Parker)

1. Savoy- (I would say something by Charlie Parker)

I don't know how well Savoy's gospel records sold.

2. Prestige- ?

James Moody: Moody's Mood For Love was a top-seller early on.

3. Riverside- ?

A Cannonball Adderley perhaps.

4. Argo- But Not for Me

Could be.

5. Milestone- ?

Dunno - that's not an easy one.

6. Blue Note- Blue Train

Yes, I would agree.

7. Pablo- ?

Another tough one - plenty of big artists, but not their most popular period.

8. Impulse- Love Supreme

Yes, I would agree.

9. Columbia- Time out or 'Round about Midnight

Not with Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen around.

10. Atlantic- Giant Steps

You gotta be kidding me - with Ray Charles, Led Zeppelin, and Genesis?

11. Verve- (I would say something by Charlie Parker)

No chance - Stan Getz: Girl From Ipanema is a contender, though.

Or are we limiting to "jazz" issues - in which case, define jazz......

Mike

That's key I think as well.

Also, do you include things such as US3 and Norah Jones for Blue Note? I thought I'd read here somewhere that these both had surpassed Blue Train in terms of units sold.

I'd also take a stab that Diana Krall would be up there for Verve.

For Columbia - and yes, limiting to "jazz" - I'd figure either Time Out, something by Miles (KOB or BB before Round About Midnight though) or possibly Concert by the Sea.

For Atlantic - I dunno, but maybe Charles Lloyd or Herbie Mann??

How about Strata East??

My guess would be the Tolliver's "Music Inc + Big Band" (the one with the white cover).  Or were there ever any "hits" on the label that I'm otherwise unaware of??

The only Strata East record to have significant sales was Gil Scott-Heron's Winter In America. It was huge by jazz standards and almost brought the label down.

I think the Slugs records outsold the Music Inc record mentioned.

For Prestige LPs, I'd think that something by Gene Ammons (Angel Eyes?) or Groove Holmes (Misty?) might be a contender.

Riverside - how about Mongo's album that had "Watermelon Man"?

Memphis Underground was a pretty big hit in its day as well, but, yeah, I think that Swiss Movement was probably bigger.

And Getz/Gilberto was huge.

Concerning Prestige, Groove Holmes' Soul Message (and other couplings with Misty) was gigantic in the last half of the '60s and I didn't witness any other Prestige session selling in such quantities. No telling what time has done to the sales numbers vs. other "classics".

What was the biggest seller on the Nessa Label?

this is my best guess, without digging out old files:

1 AEC - People In Sorrow

2 AEC - Les Stances A Sophie

3 Roscoe Mitchell - Nonaah

4 Air - Air Time

5 Warne Marsh - All Music

Regarding Verve, I can imagine that Getz/Gilberto has outsold Jazz Samba over the long run, but Jazz Samba was #1 on the LP charts for a while, so it was very big at its time.

Regarding Prestige, Misty was a huge 45, but the album sales would have been split between Soul Message and the album Misty. My bet is that over the long run Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet is their biggest selling album.

Splain me that one, Chuck, if you don't mind -- thanks!!

I thought it might be #2, as that is the one I have seen the most of in that list.
