Ed S Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 So here's the story. Recent life's circumstances have provided me with a LOT of free time. I live in the Buffalo, NY area - a mere 5-6 hours drive from the home territory of Organissimo. I've been interested in catching these guys live and my new circumstances have provided me with an opportunity to do just that. Problem is, I don't want to sit all alone in some bar in some city where I know noone. In other words, I wonder if some of you local guys might be interested in setting up a date at one of the big O's regualr gigs to get together. I hate to use the word "hang" - that's just SO Jazz Corner (not that there's anything wrong with that) Quite frankly, other than Chuck and Paul (conn) I'm not even sure who's in the area. ( Uncle Skid perhaps??) At any rate, at this point, I'm looking for some input from some of you guys who live within driving distance of any of Organissimo's gigs. I'd like to gauge the interest in setting up a date that a few of us could get together and catch one of the live shows. I know how convoluted these things tend to get from experiences on other boards. I'd like to avoid that. Perhaps I am being unrealistic. I wonder if some of you locals might take a few minutes to check out the dates on Organissimo's home page and offer up some suggestions. Thanks Ed Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Ed, I think it's a great idea. But how's this... in October we'll be in Pittsburgh (the date is still up in the air... I just found out today that we got double-booked... but we'll be there sometime between the 7th and the 10th) and then we are very close to getting a gig in NYC on the 10th. We're looking for something in the Buffalo area either before or after those hits. Any suggestions? Quote

Any suggestions? ← The Anchor Bar doesn't have live music, does it? Perfect match- spicy wings and spicy tunes. Pass the bleu cheese and the blue greeze. Quote
bertrand Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Does Dodo Greene still 'sing' at the Anchor Bar? A Blue Note legend! Bertrand. Quote
Ed S Posted August 30, 2005 Author Report Posted August 30, 2005 (edited) Any suggestions? ← Buffalo - especially these days - is not exactly a jazz Mecca. There are a few clubs - a couple of which do all types of music - that book national acts. My favorite place these days is the Lafayette Tap Room. It's primarily a Blues room though, so I'm not sure is they'd be interested. As a venue though, it's real nice - intimate, long bar, lots of room, great beer. 716 854 2466 There's also the Tralf - modern day incarnation of a legendary Buffalo jaaz club called the Tralfamadore Cafe. They book all kinds of acts 716 854 3068. The guy who runs it these days is new to the business, is in debt up to his eyeballs and the place has been threatened with closure a number of times. That didn't stop Joshua Redman, though. That's where I saw him in June. Joshua Breakstone and John Hammond are on the upcoming calendar. www.newtralf.com Another place - one that's known for booking an eclectic array of music is Nietzsche's. It's located in one of the rather bohemian neighborhoods in Buffalo and would be a good spot as well 716 886 8539 Mohawk Place is another place that books a variety of acts including blues. 716 855 3931. The River Grill books a lot of blues, mostly local 716 873 2553 And yes for those who asked - the Anchor Bar still has jazz every Friday and Saturday night and the legendary Dodo Greene still belts 'em out. They seem to have locals booked regularly and I don't think they do music on other nights. Edited August 30, 2005 by Ed Swinnich Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 If you're still interested in travelling a bit, Ed, I could be persuaded to see O again at Baker's in October. It's about 1 1/2 hours from Toledo. I might be able to fine a sober driver again, although with the price of drinks we were all sober that night! Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Thanks Ed! We're on it. As for coming to MI, that would be great, too! I'd love to meet you! But hopefully we can hook up something closer to home for you. Quote
GregK Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 (edited) what's the date of that Baker's show again? Of course, for my situation the easiest is a Friday night at the Firefly- 10 min drive from my apt! Edited August 31, 2005 by GregK Quote

Uncle Skid Posted September 1, 2005 Report Posted September 1, 2005 Ed, If Pittsburgh or Buffalo doesn't work out for whatever reason, and you still feel like driving, they play Grand Rapids, Michigan quite often. That's less than an hour from here, and I'm always up for a show and board "hang" there. I'd bet Chuck (and possibly Upright Bill) would be as well. Looks like there are two coming up in September: September 13 - 9:00pm to 1:00am Founders Brew Co. - Grand Rapids, MI September 23 - 7:30pm to 9:30pm Schuler Books - Grand Rapids, MI Be sure to let us know if you're heading this way! -- Mark Quote
