BERIGAN Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 Isaac Hayes Quits 'South Park' By ERIN CARLSON NEW YORK (AP) - Isaac Hayes has quit ``South Park,'' where he voices Chef, saying he can no longer stomach its take on religion. Hayes, who has played the ladies' man/school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed. ``There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins,'' the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said. ``Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored,'' he continued. ``As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices.'' ``South Park'' co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, ``This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem - and he's cashed plenty of checks - with our show making fun of Christians.'' Last November, ``South Park'' targeted the Church of Scientology and its celebrity followers, including actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, in a top-rated episode called ``Trapped in the Closet.'' In the episode, Stan, one of the show's four mischievous fourth graders, is hailed as a reluctant savior by Scientology leaders, while a cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and won't come out. Stone told The AP he and co-creator Trey Parker ``never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin.'' http://channels.netscape.com/celebrity/sto.../1811672597.htm Quote
Quincy Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 I knew this would happen. Oh my god, they killed chef! Those cult bastards! Trey & Matt might have some fun with this. Lots of possibilites... Maybe even use it to continue to rip on Scienlobotomy. Quote
Free For All Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 Sounds like they got the shaft. Quote
rostasi Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 Well, I guess we can always see him next month on That 70s Show! Also, there's this cult science fiction show that my wife likes to watch called Stargate SG-1 and I was walking thru the front room and there he was on the screen! (as some leader named "Tolok") R~ Quote
Christiern Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 Rostasi, is your new avatar Florida footage from the 2000 election or Ohio footage from 2004? Quote

Joe Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 We're all Scientologists. Its just that some of us have already achieved clarity on this point, and some of us have not. Quote

BERIGAN Posted March 14, 2006 Author Report Posted March 14, 2006 Rostasi, is your new avatar Florida footage from the 2000 election or Ohio footage from 2004? Nah. The footage is black and white, so it must be footage of the mob putting Kennedy over in Illinois. Quote
catesta Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 Is this show even funny anymore? I gave up on it a long time ago. I know it's still popular, but it seems the audience is made up of 13 year old kids. As for Hayes... Stone told The AP he and co-creator Trey Parker ``never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin.'' This says it all. Dude is a hypocrite. Quote

Jim Alfredson Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 Someone on another board suggested that they just re-voice the character and then pretend like nothing ever changed except one character (maybe Stan) notices a difference. But all the other characters think he's crazy. That would be funny. Quote
ejp626 Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 Honestly, I was amazed Hayes was even still with the show. There've been almost two seasons gone by where Chef isn't in any episodes or just sits in the background and doesn't talk. I guess a handful of the newest episodes had him in there, but I assumed he was long gone. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 I just got even more respect for these guys: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5286835 Quote

BERIGAN Posted March 17, 2006 Author Report Posted March 17, 2006 He did a cameo on that '70s Show last night. I wonder how he got that gig? He was big in the 70's you know! That, and the fact the show is swarming with Scientologists(Is that what one calls a group of scientologists, a swarm?) Quote
