.:.impossible Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 Jackie McLean - One Step Beyond (Blue Note BLP 4137, CDP 7 46821-2) If I'm not mistaken, I remember reading that he was actually the leader on that date. Sort of a Somethin' Else kind of thing. Thanks for the list though. The type of music he is playing on Davis Cup, or Cool Struttin' is a long way from Evolution and even the later Lee Morgan dates. Noj Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 (edited) I've got 14 of them! Looks like I've got my playlist for the week. Edited April 3, 2006 by Noj Quote

Guy Berger Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 My favorite Jackie sideman appearance isn't on BN -- it's on Mingus's Blues and Roots. Guy Quote
.:.impossible Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 Good call! I'll be pulling that one out soon. Has it been remastered recently? Blues & Roots. Quote
Guy Berger Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 Good call! I'll be pulling that one out soon. Has it been remastered recently? Blues & Roots. Rhino did remaster it on one of their "deluxe" editions. I'm not sure how much better it sounds than the original issue. The extreme shortcomings of Atlantic jazz recordings are pretty obvious on this one. Guy Quote
BruceH Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 (edited) Back To the Tracks, Cool Struttin', and Davis Cup are my favorites from that list. Other favs? Edited April 3, 2006 by BruceH Quote

kinuta Posted April 8, 2006 Report Posted April 8, 2006 Thanks for the list. I didn't know that I have his entire BN catalogue as leader and band member. Quote
andybleaden Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 Me too and I think it would give someone a lovely introduction to Blue Note records ...what a diverse collection. I always think he played well with Lee Morgan and as for favourite...hard pressed I would say the most played in my house is the Grachan Moncur Evolution out of those and the opener on Open House with Jimmy Smith Quote

I remember that when it came out in 1998 I played it a good eight or nine times before I finally put it on the shelf. Listened to it again tonight, loved it just as much, and did a search to see if anybody else here had mentioned it as a particular favorite. It & CONSEQUENCE will anchor the program (which I'd intended to do last May, but then Jackie died & I did a tribute instead). Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted April 15, 2007 Report Posted April 15, 2007 oh chewy has said it for years, INFINITY is probably hands down lees best record date ever. although charisma really probably deserves the title, as it has really the quintessential horn line of hank/jackie/lee, they playing on infinity is completely intense Quote
sal Posted April 15, 2007 Report Posted April 15, 2007 Tom Cat is my favorite from that list. What a BURNING session....I just love it. Quote
ghost of miles Posted April 15, 2007 Report Posted April 15, 2007 although charisma really probably deserves the title, as it has really the quintessential horn line of hank/jackie/lee They're on CORNBREAD, too--going to listen to both that & CHARISMA today. It's a real pleasure to revisit some of these old Lee records; haven't listened to them in years. Quote
