ghost of miles Posted May 17, 2006 Report Posted May 17, 2006 Thank God I already had all of the Ellington Treasury show titles... snapped up a bunch of Jubilee shows and much more in addition. Allegro Just search the Storyville label and you'll pull up about 300 titles, all at half off... evidently Allegro is no longer carrying them. Also doing the same with the Go Jazz label. Quote

I believe these are just changing distributorship that's all. I'm not in the market for fiscal reasons, but my search only pulled up four titles. Y'all work fast! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 17, 2006 Report Posted May 17, 2006 I'm afraid I have a dozen on the way. Quote
Dmitry Posted May 17, 2006 Report Posted May 17, 2006 $10 apiece before sale or this is the sale price? Quote
ghost of miles Posted May 17, 2006 Author Report Posted May 17, 2006 (edited) Most are $18.98 list, so they're going for $9.49 during the sale. I just went back to the well a second time--but no more!! Edited May 17, 2006 by ghost of miles Quote
jazzbo Posted May 17, 2006 Report Posted May 17, 2006 Okay, I managed to figure out how to search right, been a long time since I was on one of these sister sites. Ordered four Storyville label titles (the two cd Whiteman, the June Christy, the V-Disk Party with BG, and the Strayhorn disc (have the stuff, still have to have this version, it's a sickness) and . . .the Whiteman on HEP, all for 53 dollars. I'm broke again. Quote

paul secor Posted May 17, 2006 Report Posted May 17, 2006 (edited) Went for a half dozen - a Bechet, Strayhorn, a Ben, Spanier/Freeman V-discs, Wax Label Sessions, & NY Contemporary 5. Could have gone for at least 20 more, but I'm trying for some degree of self control these days. Oh - & thanks for posting info on this sale, David. Edited May 17, 2006 by paul secor Quote
blake Posted May 17, 2006 Report Posted May 17, 2006 There's not a single Storyville disc in my collection. Browsing through the 300 or so titles many look interesting. Would anyone care to recommend some essentials? Quote
BERIGAN Posted May 17, 2006 Report Posted May 17, 2006 A weird kind of search set-up, IMO. No way to just link the particlular search you have done(Unless you want to start with the 2nd page) You can scroll down the search by label way, and dig up 302 titles, http://www.allegro-music.com/search_form.asp or, you can do a simple search and type in STC in the search box and you will get 310 titles. Someone let me know the 8 missing from the first search! Does anyone know if Storyville is pulling out of the U.S. or not??? Oh, if you dig thru all the titles, the VHS tapes from Storyville are 75% off!!!! Quote

The Wallers, Ellingtons, Thad Jones, Warne Marsh and Defranco (among others) all caught my attention. Quote
neveronfriday Posted May 17, 2006 Report Posted May 17, 2006 (edited) At those shipping rates, it is cheaper getting them off Amazon.de via Caiman.com if you are in Europe (unless you are planning on buying a lot of these). Being an avid Teddy Wilson fan, I think the Storyville Wilson disks are essential. The Keystone Transcripts (sound = a bit historic) being my favorite, next to the late Goodman stuff with Thigpen and Lundgaard (the ugly blue one is the expanded one, if I recall correctly without running next door now) and "The Noble Art of TW" with Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (bass), and William Schiøpffe or Bjarne Rostvold (both: drums). I really enjoy those. Edited May 17, 2006 by neveronfriday Quote

HolyStitt Posted May 17, 2006 Report Posted May 17, 2006 I bought some titles, even though I am broke. The NY Contemporary Five, the 2 Marsh-Mitchell titles, and Solal Contrastes. Does anyone think they are going to run out before they can fill all of the orders? Quote

Does anyone think they are going to run out before they can fill all of the orders? Hmm, I was going to go for almost the same order, plus the Bechet and one Ellington. I hope they have more than one of each. Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 Can anyone comment on the Ben Webster, No Fool, No Fun? Looks like just a bunch of bad takes and studio chatter, worth maybe one listen ... but at 50% off, I'm wondering if may be its worth it. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 Can't find any trace of the Storyville sale on Allegro's site. What's the link? They're not listed at all in their Cybermusic Surplus page. Webster's No Fool, No Fun isn't all that essential. Fortunately I already own most of the Storyville stuff that I coveted. Quote

Unless you have all other Webster stuff, I suggest letting it go. It is interesting but only for real Ben freaks. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 It worked when I used the link provided earlier in the thread. The search engine must have had a momentary glitch. One warning: the various live recordings made at the long defunct E.J.'s in Atlanta are condensed from 2 CD sets released on the EJS label. Quote
ghost of miles Posted May 18, 2006 Author Report Posted May 18, 2006 Anybody who's remotely a Duke fan should consider snapping up some of the Treasury shows, which have been previously discussed here. Quote
Pete B Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 Treasury Series 5 is no longer available. The rest seem to still be in stock. Quote
