connoisseur series500 Posted June 10, 2006 Report Posted June 10, 2006 Hoping Joe can still make it. I'll be bringing some people up from Toledo. Anyone else planning to be there? GregK? Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted June 10, 2006 Author Report Posted June 10, 2006 Tonight, 9-12. You have a gig, Jim? Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted June 10, 2006 Report Posted June 10, 2006 No, but I doubt I'll be able to go, although I'd like to see Tony. Let me ask my wife. Are you going, Joe? Quote
Joe G Posted June 10, 2006 Report Posted June 10, 2006 I would, but I'm not in Michigan right now. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted June 11, 2006 Report Posted June 11, 2006 Tony is a world-class jazz organist. Fantastic player. I wish I could go, but here it is 8pm and I still have to run my drains in this new kitchen. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted June 11, 2006 Report Posted June 11, 2006 Funny story I was driving home from work, decided to call conn500 to see if he made it to the concert..... Paul says "Jeff, say hi to my friend, Tony" Tony and I talk for 10/15 secs, he asked why am i not there and i say because i live in arizona Finally I ask,"Tony,Who?" he says, "Monaco" TM asked me if i had a request and i said "Moanin'" I thought it was gonna be someone off the organissimo board..... Soulstation1 Posted June 11, 2006 Report Posted June 11, 2006 just heard TM live via the cellphone for maybe 15 seconds Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted June 11, 2006 Author Report Posted June 11, 2006 So how was it, conn? Tony blew the roof off the place! This guy is a force of nature. I have no other way to describe him. His guitarist was out so he joined up with a local guitarist who did a pretty good job. He didn't do much comping but handled the solos really well. He didn't even know the lines to "Mellow Mood," but he was an excellent soloist. But when Tony plays, no other instrument can be heard outside of the drums. He just fills the room. He makes all kinds of facial contortions and plays every note with his face as well as with his hands. Often, he bends down over the keys and you can only see the top of his head. His playing style is very intense and he gives it 100%. I've got to see him again. Outstanding player. If there is a better B-3 player out there, I've got to see it. I think he's better than Joey D. Another thing which has been mentioned before, by Joe amongst others: Tony is very humble. He hugs everyone and compliments the other musicians when they do great solos. He's a very genuine guy and absolutely loves what he does. Great guy. If he comes anywhere to your town, see him. Quote

connoisseur series500 Posted June 11, 2006 Author Report Posted June 11, 2006 At first hearing, Tony's name just doesn't sound like it comes from someone who is a total badass on the organ, but there is no denying the man's sound. This guy is the real deal. Quote
