Not a friendly atmosphere either iirc, but expensive vinyl's not really my thing. I'd offer to meet you there - it's not far - but my wife's away and I'm stuck home with the kids. Quote

chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted July 8, 2006 Report Posted July 8, 2006 dont be a sucker- LA's been picked clean of "rare" lps since the early 70s and the leftover from 30 yrs later is what youre seeing in these stores. if you want the true LA record expierence u need to go to this one Mexican run thifty store- thrifty stores are different than thrift stores: at a thrifTY store there are no price tags and all the merch. is on the floor in giant piles. well anyways last time i was there buried beneth a giant stack of 3rd rate quality 1980s pornography magazines, was 1 box of records but THEY WERE ALL 78S INCLUDING ***TWELEVE*** AMOS MILBURN ALADDIN RECORD 78, and Ernie Andrews on alladin jazz series 78, and a sealed copy of the 'Caresouel' movie snd'trk. (not jazz but wanted 2 mention), and BEST OF ALL A 78 on "RECORDED IN HOLLYWOOD" AND LIKE ONE SIDE IS SOME CHICK SINGING AN R&B SONG AND THE OTHER SIDE IS LIKE RED CALLENDAR AND HIS SEPTET DOING SOMETHING THATS BEBOP. TIA Are you kidding, his records are way way overpriced and he couldn't be a more rude person. Leave that store for celebrities who want to spend thousands of dollars for some Harry Belafonte LPs. I have always been able to easily find anything he has for much less than half the price and in better condition elsewhere. I got some nice things from Music Man Murray as well as Record Surplus last visit to LA, but your best bet are online sources. Quote

I was at Amoeba and Rasputin’s in Berkeley a day before I went to the Monterey Jazz Fest last year. Needless to say, you can find some nice original vinyl at both places. Some of it is in decent condition. Every time I go I end of buying records I already have. Can't help myself.............. Quote

Shannon Dickey Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 Whilst in L.A. I had to check out Amoeba, I had been to the one in Berkely and S.F. The L.A. store is sick!! I listen to all kinds of music, so it really put a dent on my Visa. While perusing the Jazz selection at the L.A. Amoeba, I was rather happy because my jazz vinyl collection was superior to what Amoeba had to offer with a few pricey exceptions. The Rock section was very dangerous for me, but I left poorer but happy. ---Best to all, HB Quote
