ghost of miles Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 Posted to Yahoo Songbirds: The following 10-CD set of "live performances" is due for release shortly on the Avid label out of the UK. This is the company that released the recent reissue of the "Bing Crosby Musical Autobiography" CD set from the Decca vaults: "Hoagy Carmichael - In Person 1925-1955" - 10 CDs AMBX150 (5022810215028) At last, available for the first time the definitive study of Hoagy Carmichael in a splendid 10 CD box set from the masters of re-mastered nostalgia... AVID Entertainment! Our collection follows Hoagy from his earliest moments on record with the likes of Hitch's Happy Harmonists, Paul Whiteman and Louis Armstrong into the 1930's where he was to have his most fruitful period and arguably his greatest success with such classics as Star Dust, Rockin' Chair and Georgia On My Mind. Our journey continues into the 40's and 50's where the master not only produces great new work but creates new versions of old classics often better sung and better realised than the earlier 20's and 30's recordings! Decca recordings are heavily featured throughout the box set alongside many tracks which first appeared on "V" Disc as well as a variety of "bootleg" labels. For the first time, the ARA label is represented featuring Hoagy as singer and pianist singing such classics as Snowball and Lazy Bones and perhaps foreshadowing the likes of Elton John and Billy Joel! For an untrained musician Hoagy Carmichael made an enormous contribution to 20th Century music and left us a magnificent legacy of standards as this well packaged and re-mastered box set illustrates. It is sadly perhaps, a lost era now, as Hoagy said in 1979 " I could have accomplished a hell of a lot more... but rock just knocked me out. I just quit almost on account of rock n roll!" His last hit was in 1950 but his musical legacy will live on forever. CD1 HITCH'S HAPPY HARMONISTS 1. Boneyard Shuffle 2. Washboard Blues HOAGY CARMICHAEL AND HIS PALS 3. One Night In Havana 4. Matthew Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 Thanks for the heads-up on this set GofM. Probably have to get this off ebay when it comes out. Quote
paul secor Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 Man, I like Hoagy Carmichael, but you could give me another lifetime and I probably would never listen to ten CDs - pass. Quote
medjuck Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 These aren't all "live performances" are they? Quote
jazzbo Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 No, they're not, I have about half or more of this material on cds from JSP, King Jazz, RCA, etc. Quote
LAL Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 Thanks for heads up - will be looking out for this. Quote
Ed S Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 (edited) I'm interested in this as well. I've only got the Hoagy Sings Carmichae disc that came out several years ag but enjoy that enough to be very curious.l Edited July 24, 2006 by Ed Swinnich Quote
BERIGAN Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 Man, that is a lot of Hoagy! (In case you didn't know) Perhaps some of the later stuff is interesting, but I think I will stay with the old RCA cd I have of his work.... Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 23, 2006 Author Report Posted July 23, 2006 I have a fair amount of this material as well, but I'm really interested in the radio broadcasts. I'll probably spring for it if I can find it at a decent price... esp. since I'm doing jazz radio in the heart of Hoagy country (his gravesite is about five blocks from where I live, and I usually pass it on my morning run). Chuck Nessa Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 I believe Avid is a US company hiding under a phony English identity to escape US copyright laws. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 Overstock.com had one copy of this earlier for about 51.00 and $1.40 shipping! Quote
BruceH Posted December 17, 2006 Report Posted December 17, 2006 I'm interested in this as well. I've only got the Hoagy Sings Carmichae disc that came out several years ag but enjoy that enough to be very curious.l Me too. Ten CD's is a Hell of a lot, but if I can find it at a yardsale or something... Quote
jazzbo Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 (edited) Well, I'm enjoying this set. Nice basic compact packaging. Nice notes. Decent sound. I feel the price I paid (fifty-two bucks) is low enough to make me not sweat the duplication I have and enjoy the music I don't have. Edited December 20, 2006 by jazzbo Quote
BruceH Posted December 29, 2006 Report Posted December 29, 2006 To me he'll always be "Cricket." Quote
jazzbo Posted December 29, 2006 Report Posted December 29, 2006 I've never seen him in the role, but can imagine that he'd make an impression! Quote
Matthew Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 Well, I'm enjoying this set. Nice basic compact packaging. Nice notes. Decent sound. I feel the price I paid (fifty-two bucks) is low enough to make me not sweat the duplication I have and enjoy the music I don't have. Anyone else buy this set? How's the music? Inquiring minds need to know. Quote
