Aggie87 Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 Oklahoma just announced today that they've kicked their starting QB off the team, Rhett Bomar. Apparently was being paid for a job he wasn't performing.... *********** From CNN/SI: Report: Sooners dismiss QB Bomar OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Oklahoma starting quarterback Rhett Bomar will not play for the Sooners this season following an investigation by the team, according to a television report. Oklahoma confirmed that two players had been dismissed by the team but did not identify them. The school said in a statement that the players violated NCAA rules by working at a private business and taking "payment over an extended period of time in excess of time actually worked." Oklahoma City television station KWTV reported that Bomar, who set an Oklahoma freshman record with 2,018 passing yards after taking over as the Sooners' starter in the second game last season, was one of the two players who had been permanently dismissed. Oklahoma City television station KOCO reported that Bomar's roommate, offensive lineman J.D. Quinn, was the second player. "We spend a considerable amount of time addressing our players regarding their personal conduct and the NCAA rules," head coach Bob Stoops said in a statement. "They know exactly what we expect from them. Ultimately, they have to make right decisions. The same holds true for our boosters. When they do not, the consequences are serious, and we will not tolerate this behavior. "Our team and university actions are necessary because of the intentional participation and knowledge of the student athletes in these violations," Stoops said. A top-rated recruit out of high school, Bomar redshirted his first season while 2004 Heisman Trophy winner Jason White completed his career. Bomar lost a quarterback competition to Paul Thompson last fall, but was named the starter after the Sooners lost to TCU in the first week. He started Oklahoma's final 11 games and completed 54 percent of his passes, while throwing 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Oklahoma finished 2005 by winning six of its final seven games, including a victory against Oregon in the Holiday Bowl. Quinn started four times at right guard last season but missed spring practice with an injury. "I firmly believe that our program is stronger than any individual player and that a championship program cannot compromise its values," Stoops said in the statement. Thompson, the only quarterback other than Bomar with experience at Oklahoma, was moved to receiver after Bomar became the starter. A backup in 2002 and 2003, Thompson played in a reserve role until he beat out Bomar last fall. In his career, Thompson has completed 42 of 73 passes for 428 yards. He caught 11 passes for 106 yards after moving to receiver last season. Other options would be Joey Halzle, a junior transfer who passed for 2,077 yards and 13 touchdowns in 10 games last season at Golden West (Calif.) Community College, freshman Sam Bradford and walk-on Hays McEachern. Quote
Aggie87 Posted August 2, 2006 Author Report Posted August 2, 2006 I'm hopeful for my Aggies this season. The defense surely can't be any worse than it was last year, when they were ranked last nationally vs. the pass. They fired the D-Coordinator, and hired Gary Darnall, who I'm not sure is a good hire, but we'll see. He switched from a 4-3 D to a 4-2-5, in order to "get more speed on the field". Our d sure has come a long way (in the wrong direction) from the good old days when we lined up in a 3-4, and knocked the crap outta other teams. On offense, Reggie McNeal is finally gone (to the Bengals, in a "Slash" type role), so the QB is now Stephen McGee. He played well against Texas last year, and actually had us in the game. He'll do well, and many Aggie fans think he's the next coming of Bucky Richardson, if anyone remembers that name. I think we'll be fine on offense, and expect we'll become more of a running, grind 'em out offense again, in order to minimize the amount of time our defense is on the field. Also, we have a seriously weak non-conference schedule (The Citadel, Lousiana-Lafayette, and Louisiana Tech anybody?), so it's conceivable if we could improve even just a little on the field, the record could be significantly better than last year's. Gig 'em Aggies! Quote
Aggie87 Posted August 29, 2006 Author Report Posted August 29, 2006 Games are starting this weekend!! Rhett Bomar signed with Sam Houston State University, but may not be eligible to play until halfway through the season, I believe. Be interesting to see if he's any good with the lesser talent that will surround him at SHSU. Is Ohio State the best team in the nation this year? Can Texas do well without Vince Young? Will my Aggie defense repeat as about the worst in the NCAA? Quote
Aggie87 Posted August 29, 2006 Author Report Posted August 29, 2006 seems a bit early to be handing out bowl bids to me.... Army invited to Poinsettia Bowl WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) -- Before its first snap of the season, Army has been invited to the Poinsettia Bowl. Now the Black Knights have to win enough games to be eligible. Bowl executive director Bruce Binkowski and Army officials announced in a conference call Tuesday that Army will be invited to play a team from the Mountain West Conference on Dec. 19 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. The invitation is good only if the Black Knights go at least 6-6. Based on Army's recent history, that could be a mighty big chore. Army hasn't been to a bowl game since 1996, when it lost to Auburn, 32-29, in the Liberty Bowl. "This was the best bowl for us, and we believe we have a great chance of being bowl-eligible," Army director of athletics Kevin Anderson said. "We have to come up with the wins, but we are guaranteed. It would just be fantastic. They all love coach Ross out there." Bobby Ross was the hugely popular coach of the San Diego Chargers from 1992-96. His teams made three playoff appearances in five years, including reaching the Super Bowl after the 1994 season. The Black Knights were 4-7 last year, their second under Ross, who took over a program in severe disarray. Army won only two games in his first season, started last season 0-6, then won four straight before losing to Navy. Army opens its season Saturday at Arkansas State. Quote
GA Russell Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 San Diego is a navy town, isn't it? I don't think too many of the locals are going to want to go see Army. Quote

Dan Gould Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 Anyone notice how ESPN is promoting three or four different ways to catch the Seminoles take on Miami on Monday night? ESPN - has the regular broadcast ESPN2 - has multiple camera angles, including isolation cameras ESPNU (I think) - has the "skycam" angle with audio from the radio broadcast I'm guessing though that ESPN2 will only look good if you've got something bigger than our set's 25 inch screen. Noj Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 I was at the Rose Bowl yesterday to watch the Bruins take on the Utes from Utah. UCLA's new starting QB Ben Olson looked really solid and threw for over 300 yards and 2 TDs. The game was closer than the final score indicates, the Bruins got a lot of lucky breaks. A win's a win! Aggie87 Posted September 3, 2006 Author Report Posted September 3, 2006 (edited) Aggies beat the Citadel yesterday, 35-3. But that's like beating a glorified HS team, I think. We didn't look that great on offense (6 fumbles, 4 of which were turnovers), but I think they will settle in, with a QB starting only his second collegiate game. My concern is the defense though. We used to be "Linebacker U" for a while (seems like a LONG time ago now), with a fierce 3-4. When Franchione was stolen from Alabama, he immediately switched us to a 4-3, and (I think) robbed us of our identity. After that unsuccessful change, they fired the D-coordinator, brought in Gary Darnell (blech), and have switched again, this time to a 4-2-5 base defense. This means we basically are operating a prevent defense all game long. The only thing a prevent defense does is prevent you from winning the game. If the Citadel could put up almost 250 yards of offense on us, I'm worried when we actually begin conference play and have to contend with Tx Tech, Oklahoma, Nebraska, & Texas. I predict this will be Franchione's last year at A&M. Edited September 3, 2006 by Aggie87 Quote

Dan Gould Posted September 5, 2006 Report Posted September 5, 2006 Nice win by my Seminoles! I didn't feel very good after the first half but the offense managed to execute a little and the defense was just outstanding (what did they give up, 12 yards total in the second half, and 7 of them and came on Miami's last ditch chance? Unbelievable). while the score was similar, its nice to see this game was much better played than last year's, although neither offense looked great ... Feels sweet to finally win at the Orange Bowl! md655321 Posted September 16, 2006 Report Posted September 16, 2006 GO BLUE! The Wolverines thrashed the #2 Fighting Irish. Great game. That Michigan Defense is just plain nasty. Oklahoma loses a 13 point lead in the final 1:09. Not good. Great weekend of football so far, and we still have tomorrow. Quote
Free For All Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 The Clemson-FSU game ended up being a pretty good one. Tommy won this Bowden Battle. Good for him. Clemson beat the Seminoles on the road! Quote
Free For All Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 Michigan's stock rose quite a bit this weekend. Looks like ND is a paper tiger, again. No national championship bid for them now. Quote
wolff Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 Good week for me.... Thank you Michigan....if SC does not get hit by sanctions before they play Auburn for another title....... LSU vs Auburn.. Oh my FN God!!!!! These are the 2 best teams in the country, that $$ can buy. Throw SC into that mix, also. Washington State Cougs overcome Baylor at Qwest. I know the Cougs All American DE, Bruce. U of Washington beats Fresno State. UW took a knee at the Fresno 1 yard line, or it would have been an 8 point win. We are all pulling for the ex-ND coach to get things turned around. Oregon by one over the Sooners ... Hell yeah!!! But the real game is St. Bonaventure vs Oaks Christian, coming up this Friday on FOX. OC's Clausen(ND bound, number one prospect in USA) and Tyler(SC, Wendell's kid).. they have played no one..vs Bonny who has played and beaten everyone. Quote

Six years of shitty teams and crappy seasons is enough. Quote
