Guy Berger Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 I downloaded this OOP ECM album recently. My first exposure to Bailey. Lots of scraping. I liked it! Guy Quote
mikeweil Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 I had the LP back then - sold it after many years 'cause I was gettin' tired of listening to free music. What I kept was the poem to the cover - my introduction to the great E.E. Cummings. A friend gave me a burn recently. I listened again, and I found it's a great example of spontaneous duo playing. I only wish Holland would have a) played bass and b) a little calmer. Quote
Bright Moments Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 add this to the cello in jazz thread!!!! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 (edited) Good record, and an interesting complement to the Holland duo with Barre Phillips, I think of the same year... Edited September 1, 2006 by clifford_thornton Quote
ep1str0phy Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 Good record, and an interesting complement to the Holland duo with Barre Phillips, I think of the same year... As long as it's up--how is that Holland/Phillips album? I've seen it everywhere, but I'm somewhat tentative on what seems (up front) like it could be mismatch. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 It's good, especially the second side, which has shorter pieces that are more "compositional." Still nowhere near Phillips' bass quartet on Japo or the Peter Warren on Enja (which adds Altschul, Stu Martin, John Surman and Chick Corea on side 2). But then, those aren't duos! The solo Barre Phillips on Futura/Opus One (reissued from the private press on Music Man) is rad, too. Really rad. Quote

FWIW: Love the Barre/Holland album cover too. Quote

Besides the fact that I dig his music (those Nine Winds are becoming harder and harder to get) I respect him now as an artist! Quote
