Soulstation1 Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 (edited) sad story http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/news/story?id=2747087 Edited January 29, 2007 by Soulstation1 Quote
Jazzmoose Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 Oh, a horse. I thought it was a second baseman... Quote
BruceH Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 I heard this on the radio this morning. Sad news. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 Yeah, boo hoo. I mean, sure... nice horse. But go read the story on the front page of the Free Press about the 2 1/2 year old boy in foster care who died a horrible death last August. And that shit is happening every day, all over the country, probably all over the world. That's a little more newsworthy and tragic. Quote
Shawn Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 Agreed, much ado about nothing (important). Quote
Quincy Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 At this point it's kind of a relief he got put down, as he had had a lot of surgery and it wasn't working. But kudos to the owners for trying. They could have easily cashed in the insurance policy from the get go. For those who get bothered by celebrity news overshadowing tragic events of unknown people, you might want to check out Neko Case's "Star Witness" from her Fox Confessor album. A fine song that addresses tragedy that isn't deemed newsworthy, since it happened to a person from the wrong neighborhood. Quote
Randy Twizzle Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 Sometimes the news media just can't win. When they cover tragic stories involving unknown people they're often accused of being vultures who are exploiting personal tragedy. Then when they devote space and time to story about a dead thoroughbred horse they're accused of ignoring real tragedies involving poor unknown people. The horse won the most famous race in the U.S. last year. His early death is very newsworthy, and I find nothing wrong with the attention it's getting. Reading about Barbaro's death doesn't mean that I've forgotten about the suffering of humans, how the hell could that be possible? Quote
BruceH Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 How dare I feel sorry for a horse. Bad, bad me. Quote

Reading about Barbaro's death doesn't mean that I've forgotten about the suffering of humans, how the hell could that be possible? Well put. It's like when a whale ends up swimming the wrong way and ends up a river, or whathaveyou. The media covers it, people are concerned, then people say how that story gets more coverage than a murder does...well, I see it the other way around. I am glad people still have some compassion left........ Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 I just don't see why it has to be on every newspage and then here as well. It was a horse. It made it's owners a lot of money. It was a horse. Quote
rostasi Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 OK, I think that this is the last straw (no pun intended). Quote
Michael Weiss Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 Oh, a horse. I thought it was a second baseman... I thought he was a drummer. Quote

Dan Gould Posted January 30, 2007 Report Posted January 30, 2007 I just don't see why it has to be on every newspage and then here as well. It was a horse. It made it's owners a lot of money. It was a horse. It was a horse who caught the attention of a lot of people by winning the Derby in record-setting fashion, then had a catastrophic injury in its next race. A lot of people were heartbroken and hoped that the horse would recover. That led to massive media coverage and naturally, a great deal of coverage when time ran out. Count me as one who thinks that we are capable of mourning a wide variety of tragedies. Quote
sheldonm Posted January 30, 2007 Report Posted January 30, 2007 Hey, the topic was started by someone that was bummed about the story. Always room to start a thread about the kid that died (very tragic) or any other sad/tragic story but no reason to dump on the guys that wanted to talk about this story...just my 2 cents. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 30, 2007 Report Posted January 30, 2007 Sorry, but the article on the boy really upset me and after reading it, this story just seemed so small. I mean really... the horse is dead. That sucks. But the owners are still rich, the rider is still here, none of their family is dead. 2 1/2 year old boy with broken bones and bruises all over his body. It just puts things in perspective. Quote

Jim, I'm not really trying to comare the two and would agree the boy's death is a tragedy. I just think the Barbaro thing garnered a ton of publicity over the past 8-9 months and a guy posted a thread on it because he thought there may be some interest to others.....my better half is a vet and she can't stop talking about it...! In my mind, not close to being as tragic as a child being harmed/killed but to those animal lovers (not necessarily referring to the horse owners), it's a big deal as well....so I guess I kinda understand the hoopla about it. m~ Quote
Soulstation1 Posted January 30, 2007 Author Report Posted January 30, 2007 (edited) i'm sorry if a compared a horse to an abused child........... Edited January 30, 2007 by Soulstation1 Quote
