Rooster_Ties Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 (edited) See the subject for the parameters of this thread. Bonus points if there are NO chordal instrument involved at all, though that isn't a restriction in this thread. (So anything all-acoustic (with chordal instruments, or not) IS fair game.) (But by the way, for the purposes of this thread -- vibes are OK to include (though still technically "plugged in"). Why?? Cuz vibes are NOT exactly an instrument that people bitch about when they bitch about electricity in jazz. ) So, who's taken on grease, and/or jazz/funk, and/or jazz-rock without really pluggin' in?? (And has ANYBODY ever covered ANY electric Miles (from 1969 or after) with an all-ACOUSTIC group?? Or how about electric Miles with an acoustic piano, at least??) .:.impossible Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 I think I know what you are looking for, but I don't think I have anything that REALLY fits the mold. I would say some Henry Threadgill gets in there. There's a number of things with vibes that would fit more into what The Magnificent was posting. This is a very good album, wasn't at the top of mind when I read your topic, but I think I have recommended it to you in the past: Now, there is an electric guitar plugged in on a couple of tracks, maybe just one, but for the most part, this is all acoustic. BTW, the vibraphone does not need to be plugged in to make a sound. It is an acoustic instrument. What you are plugging in is a motor that spins fans in your resonators to create the vibrato effect. Many vibists never use the motor. In some ways, I would think O'Neals Porch has all-acoustic grease qualities to it. Same way Natural Essence would though, I guess. I'm curious to see which direction this thread goes. I bet adamommy has some good recommendations for this thread. Quote

JSngry Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 Some subtle, all-ACOUSTIC grease: OK. I get it. Hmmm. Definitely not a "unanimous choice", not by any means, but it's long been a favorite of mine, especially "People Make The World Go Round". Yeah, it's CTI, and yeah, it's slicker than hell, and yeah, Ron Carter's all over the bottom of it like Sherwin-Williams in reverse, but when it's all over, it's got a vibe (no pun intended) all it's own, even a bit of CTI Mojo, and the slink factor is stealthy but very real. At least it is for me. Quote
Guest donald petersen Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 imp-honestly, i dunno. i got nothing off the top of my head. Quote
Guest donald petersen Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 i am not advocting this album because i don't like it at all but sort of recently there was a christian mcbride trio album where he and a trumpeter and guitarist (who i suppose is plugged in but in a quiet clean boring way) do herbie hancock songs and they do "chameleon" which perhaps is of interest to someone asking if anyone covered electric miles acoustically. i mean most keith jarrett albums from the 70s have him getting down a little. part of rudolph johnson's black jazz albums get down a bit. many black jazz albums have a song or two which would probably fit rooster's parameters. yusef lateef also got down in a more acoustic way sometimes in the late 60s and early 70s. what about on that double LP live set on atlantic, if i recall. some of it was pretty funky. Guest donald petersen Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 a board member mentioned this roy meriwether "nubian lady" album which looks like it might fit but he or her wasn't so helpful in describing the music. dgroove has it. might be a winner acoustic grease/funk-wise or it might sound like bad ramsey lewis. i dunno. two kenny barron covers...hmmm. Soul Stream Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 What immediately comes to mind is something like "The 3 Sounds: Live At The IT Club." That is a funky session completely acoustic. Quote
Guest donald petersen Posted February 18, 2007 Report Posted February 18, 2007 (edited) no i am not 55, clemme. late 20s.... my dad's collection is not so big. he is a pianist and likes jazz a lot so he has, you know, bill evans and miles davis and kenny barron and coltrane and hancock (both blue note and columbia stuff) and joe henderson and shorter and ron carter (he loved those carter milestone LPs for some reason) and jarrett and tyner and oregon and lee morgan and jimmy smith and montgomery and grant green and silver, off the top of my head. definitely enough to get me interested when i was younger and give me a good jump-off point. but i imagine if someone like mr. sangrey was my father...it would have blown my mind. should have added ahmad jamal, clem. a lot of jamal LPS. not that it matters... JSngry Posted February 18, 2007 Report Posted February 18, 2007 but i imagine if someone like mr. sangrey was my father...it would have blown my mind. You can ask my kids what that's been like... Mixed reviews, I'm sure, although once they get out of the house and get their own, I'm sure that will change for them as it did for me. Quote
Guest donald petersen Posted February 18, 2007 Report Posted February 18, 2007 mixed reviews? i'm just talking about record collections and it seems like you have everything! unless the mixed reviews are because you don't let youngsters handle the valuable LPs. Quote

No, the mixed reviews would be about having me as a father... Having me as a neighbor is probably more what you have in mind. If it's not, it should be. Quote
