jostber Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 Do you have any thoughts on these french jazz compilations from Dreyfus Records? http://www.dreyfusrecords.com/cgi-local/So...REFJAZZ&l=0 I think they're very fine compilations, with great sound. Especially like the Art Tatum and Charlie Parker ones. Quote
Bright Moments Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 dont know about the compilations - but i really liked this dreyfus release: Quote
medjuck Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 I have 2 Ellingtons from Dreyfus. The sound is great. Quote
neveronfriday Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 I bought (90s ?) a whole bunch of compilations that all had similar covers like the one below. They all had good to excellent sound and I remember them getting favorable reviews in audiophile mags as well. Quote

thomastreichler Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 I have the following compilations from the Dreyfus Reference series: Count Basie - Swinging The Blues Nat King Cole - Route 66 Duke Ellington - Ko-Ko Duke Ellington - Take The A Train Erroll Garner - Trio Woody Herman - Four Brothers Charlie Parker - Now's The Time Art Tatum - Over The Rainbow Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin' Max Roach & Clifford Brown - Jordu Dave Brubeck - All The Things You Are These are fine compilations, the selections expertly chosen and compiled. The sound, to my ears, is excellent, far from being "dead", making every instrument clearly audible, even in recordings from the 30's and 40's. Quote

jostber Posted September 28, 2007 Author Report Posted September 28, 2007 (edited) Dreyfus Records have a new batch of Dreyfus Reference releases out this month. Among them... Looks great. Two other french labels that are doing great reissues with fine sound and remastering are "Fremeaux" and "Le Chant du Monde". The french are doing a great job with reissues. http://fremeaux.com/ http://chantdumonde.com/en/label/jazz.php Edited September 28, 2007 by jostber Quote

The french are doing a great job with reissues. http://fremeaux.com/ http://chantdumonde.com/en/label/jazz.php I am a great fan of those two but the best one for me is the Jazz in Paris series from Universal France. The only one of those labels that had access to the original masters/tapes. Plus Jazz in Paris made splendid use of vintage photos for their covers and inside notes. The other labels had no access to the original masters and had to rely on copies from record collectors. Quote
mikeweil Posted September 28, 2007 Report Posted September 28, 2007 I wonder what source they used for the Adderley - since this is public domain in Europe now, they're along the same line as Fresh Sound et al. - nothing I complain about. But I'd like to know if it's the complete session with all alternates they reissue. Quote
brownie Posted September 28, 2007 Report Posted September 28, 2007 Mike, this is the tracklist for the Adderley Dreyfus: 1. Cannonball 2. Everglade 3. Bohemia After Dark 4. Fallen Feathers 5. Carribean Cutie 6. Willow Weep For Me 7. You'D Be So Nice To Come Home To 8. A Little Taste 9. I've Never Been In Love Before 10. Falling In Love With Love 11. New Arrival 12. I Should Care 13. Crazy Baby 14. Polka Dots And Moonbeams 15. The Song Is You Quote
mikeweil Posted September 28, 2007 Report Posted September 28, 2007 So this compiles tracks from Savoy and EmArcy - who needs this? Quote
