Got an e-mail from True Blue including details of some sales of Francis Wolff photos. (Should this be in the Mosaic forum or somewhere else?)

WMOBLH75-72DPI.jpg

Hank Mobley coming out of the Columbus Circle subway station in New York City in 1963. This shot was used for the cover of his "No Room For Squares" album.

This 11 x 14 fine art fiber print with an image size of 10 x 10 was made from Francis Wolff's original negative.

Miles, Dex, Herbie go for $750

Hank for $500

Curtis Fuller, poor bugger, goes for $300.

SO HOW MUCH FOR A FRED JACKSON PRINT!!!!!!!

HOW MUCH FOR DON WILKERSON!

HOW MUCH FOR BABY FACE???????

(Oh, we don't do those.....)

I've got a few framed 16x20s of the 'old style' Mosaic prints hanging in the house. A 'Hank with ciggie and mike' from 'The Turnaround' (the one inside the RVG CD pack), a Wayne Shorter 'All Seeing Eye', Coltrane/Fuller/Morgan 'Blue Train', a Freddie Hubbard 'The Turnaround', an Art Farmer 'Stylings of Silver' and a Melvin Lastie 'Alligator Bogaloo'. Love em ! :)

I seem to recall that Mosaic stopped doing shipments of the Wolff prints overseas a few years ago - not sure if they have changed this policy.

This Hank Mobley's picture is one of my favourite BN cover art! But $750 is a hell of a lot of money and my other half would kill me if I was to go for this!! I'd love to pull the trigger but I'd rather spend the money on more music. She doesn't seem to mind too much about that....

Looks like they have jacked up the prices quite a bit. Some of mine were 'seconds'/spares but once framed you wouldn't know it at all - they were a great deal. The others I picked up at an exhibition some years ago in London - the Shorter is marked up 1/150 in the print run and the Coltrane is 11/150 I think. They did a very fine job with the framing/matting.

Still, that picture of Hank is pretty damn nice..

And nary a Jackson, Wilkerson or Willette among them - just those commercial people :)

I have dozens of these prints in various sizes, bought before they changed to the ink jet prints (which are very nice and archival as well). At that time, they told me they would basically print anything that I could find that Francis shot? May be worth giving them a call. Most likely they don't want to list everthing he shot....hell I wouldn't list everything I have shot.

I have a nice big print of Jimmy Smith that was used on the Mosaic set that I had Jimmy sign...very cool. He was under the weather that night and a "little" grouchy!

I like the full pic much better than the cropped version used for the cover.

I feel the same way about the Trane photo used on Blue Trane. By the time I first saw it they were out of print. I found a poster with the uncropped picture on e-Bay, then bought a different shot from Mosaic that looked like it had been taken a few seconds later from a different angle.
