(AP) — Porter Wagoner has lung cancer and remains hospitalized in serious condition, a publicist for the country singer said Saturday. His Nashville publicist, Darlene Bieber, said she had no further information about his condition. The 80-year-old singer in May celebrated his 50th year at the Grand Ole Opry, the long-running live country music show. Wagoner, known for his rhinestone stage outfits, helped launch the career of Dolly Parton by hiring her as his duet partner in 1967. Parton visited Wagoner in the hospital last week and pledged to sing with him again, Opry spokeswoman Jessie Schmidt had said Friday. This year, he and partner Marty Stuart released the CD "Wagonmaster," earning Wagoner some of the best reviews of his career. Hosted by Google Quote

catesta Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 I remember watching the Porter Wagoner show when I was a kid. My grandfather of all people put it on the TV. He used to get a kick out Porter's style of dress. Seems as if there was a spot during the show intro where they did a close up of Porter's boots while he was stepping of the bus. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Another artist I despised in my youth out of ignorance....fortunately, youth turned out to be curable! Quote

alocispepraluger102 Posted October 29, 2007 Report Posted October 29, 2007 (edited) a marvelous fine entertainer, fine singer, and shrewd business man. he had the ability to laugh at himself, a trait possessed by too few of us. it's just about time to pull out an old opry tape and remember. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071029/ap_on_en_mu/obit_wagoner Edited October 29, 2007 by alocispepraluger102 Quote
