Pheew! I thought you're speaking of vinyl...

Personally I don't care about TV broadcasting, though I currently work in it. I think I am not going to spend a dime to update my TV, maybe my wife will do it.

this is just about broadcasts in the U.S., and may may have already happened in other countries.

Actually, it should happen in Italy too, but they postponed the date, from 2008 up 2011. I hope in another delay. My TV is just seven years old, basically brand new.

So, if I'm hearing right in the media (and I've not dug into this one bit, so I only know what I've heard randomly), if I have cable TV now, I basically don't have to do anything different after the change?? (I heard congress is mandating that cable TV provide the necessary bridge from the future technology back to the old stuff we have now.) And can I use my old TV equipment as is, presumably with a new decoder box from the cable company??

Actually, I should amend that to say that I'll need to actually get a decoder box from the cable company. I currently use the decoders (or is "receiver" a better term?) in the TV's themselves. So yes, I can't tape anything different that what I'm watching on the same TV itself, and yes, I'm still taping on VHS.

I never tape anything to keep, so I pretty much only use the VCR to time-shift viewing (yes, like a DVR, or Tivo). Which leads to a good question, will my old VCR's be able to tape the HDTV signals after they are decoded back into the old (current) technology?? I would think they would have to, in order for the signal to display on older TV's.

I imaging we'll upgrade to "digital cable" around the time we have to get a decoder box from the cable company (in a little less than 2 years). Until now, we've been content with the basic cable we have now (about 70 stations).

I think (hope) the answer should be "yes" to your questions. FWIW they closed down the last of the analog TV broadcasting here in Sweden last week, and that's how it works here.
