AmirBagachelles
Does anybody know why the Jimmy Lyons title never made to CD? Is his estate in good control of his material? I think Lyons and Cecil Taylor might be my favorite new artistic-taste experience since I got back into jazz listening in '99 with the help of Miles and Mingus. clifford_thornton
I don't think that's one of the LP reissues either. Strange. Oh well, better to stick with the Black Saints, Hat Huts and the Ayler box.
Chuck Nessa
Lester Bowie told me of the various "sideman gigs" on Byg and America, Lyons was the only leader to hold rehearsals.
JSngry
...better to stick with the Black Saints, Hat Huts and the Ayler box. Must respectfully dissent on this. OTHER AFTERNOONS is a great record, imo.
Chuck Nessa
Must respectfully dissent on this. OTHER AFTERNOONS is a great record, imo. It is at least very, very good. I have a habit of losing concentration on other Lyons dates (may be my flaw, but real). My "very, very good" qualification is 'cause I don't think he ever made the "best" recording in him. JSngry
Good point. What about JUMP UP, WHAT TO DO ABOUT? That and OTHER AFTERNOONS are the Lyons-as-leader sides I consistently reach for.
Brandon Burke
Too bad the Jones didn't make it to CD. Great record. Yes.
clifford_thornton
My "very, very good" qualification is 'cause I don't think he ever made the "best" recording in him. I completely agree.

OTHER AFTERNOONS is a great record, imo. Totally agreee! One of the major scandal in jazz recordings is the lack of attention that Jimmy Lyons got from the US labels, big or small. Not a single one bothered to give him a leader's date while he was still around! And the new issues still come from outside the USA!
fent99
Late as ever but another vote for Other Afternoons. I haven't heard it in a long time (Anyone help me there?) but I prefer it to pretty much everything else I've ever heard from him including the classic stuff with Taylor. How is the Ayler box? Worth the outlay?
clifford_thornton
Yes.

clifford_thornton
I thought Brandon told you to get the Coursil like a year ago!
Late
I thought Brandon told you to get the Coursil like a year ago! He did. (I said "OK.") But my resistance to authority kicked in at the time. Then I finally realized that if I wanted to hear more Arthur Jones (what little there is on record), I'd better capitulate. clifford_thornton
You'll be glad you did. He's also on Yasmina and Frank Wright - Your Prayer among a few others, and gets prominent solo space (as does Coursil) on the latter. Chalupa
Instead of the Paul Bley, or even one of the AEC albums, I wish Universal France would have reissued Arthur Jones' Scorpio in the new Free America line. The one track I have ("Brother B") is something else — I keep coming back to it. Is the rest of the album as good? So has Scorpio ever been issued on cd?? Late
Nope. Only one track — "Brother B" — has made it to compact disc. It's a damn, damn fine track. It's available on this box set, which is well worth picking up: It's also the only way you can get Kenneth Terroade on cd.
Chalupa
Bummer. Thanks for the heads up.
clifford_thornton
I thought there was a P-Vine CD of Scorpio.
peterintoronto
I thought there was a P-Vine CD of Scorpio. There is a P-Vine LP of Scorpio on eBay right now. Only $129.99 too! Ugly artwork no charge. http://tinyurl.com/5rxwvm
clifford_thornton
Yeah, he's hawking his LPs for pretty high prices...
StarThrower
Anybody familiar with the supposedly 24 bit remastered mini sleeve editions on Sunspots label? Have these BYG/Actuel albums ever sounded good on CD? Most of the recordings I have sound brittle, but I couldn't resist the new Charly Art Ensemble 3-fer, and Shepp Yasmina/Malcolm CDs when I spotted them this past weekend in a local store. Chuck Nessa
As far as I know all of the cd reissues are needle drops. The master tapes went missing a long time ago.
