Hi all,

I'm looking for a nice, gently used (or new) copy of the Mike Taylor Trio CD on Gilles Peterson's Impressed-Repressed series. It was originally issued on Columbia Lansdowne (LP).

I would be happy to pay a fair market value for the CD, as I know it's tough to find and quite rare. Shoulda bought it when it was around for $18.99 but had other things to think about...

Thanks,

Clifford

Clifford,

I have this CD, but I really want to hang onto it. The good news is I got it from Dusty Groove, so it's not like it's impossible to find. I have one other CD of his called Pendulum that features Taylor with a quartet. Of the two, I prefer Trio, but they are both extraordinarily good. Anyone who hasn't had the pleasure of hearing Mike Taylor is missing out on a unique talent with his own singular voice. The fact that he passed accidently at such an early age is a real tragedy and a genuine loss to the music.

Up over and out.

The fact that he passed accidently

Odds are that it was a suicide. Alternatively he may have thought he could swim to his relatives' house across the Thames Estuary. Tragic, nevertheless.

Strange echos of Albert Ayler's fate - and around the same time..

Jazz House Records UK

The above site is highly recommended for CD and vinyl jazz. Alan Ross who runs it has a large inventory of stuff with regular monthly updates emailed to the interested. I have no connection with Alan other than being a highly satisfied customer for the past 3 or 4 years. Highly reliable grading and excellent service in my experience and always a pleasure to deal with. Shipping rates strike me as highly reasonable. Prices for LPs and CDs are also very reasonable especially for OOP material IMO. His latest email has the following line

Recommend a friend.

If you know of any jazz vinyl or cd collectors who don't order from JHR, please give them our email/ web address. When they make contact & mention your name, their first order & your next order will get a 10% discount.

The strengthening dollar should help US members.....I gather though he has no further copies of Mike Taylor Trio :tdown

Just got the Trio from Alan - haven't spun it yet but the shipping was fast and the disc/booklet are in nice shape (jewel box a little aged). Can't wait to give this a listen!

Watch a Japanese paper sleeve edition come out in a month!

Clunky, how are you liking that Lacy on Quark? Tried to get that one but he'd sent it off to you! ;)

Ha... another competitor for Alan's vinyl !!!

Very nice in fact, the Quark has solo set Crops and The Woe. The latter is pretty raw and noisy group piece in slighltly dull mono. The solo set is much lighter. I also go High low and Order on Claxon which on first listen strikes me as superb.

Got that one as soon as it was out, actually. Listened to Trio in my car on the way home for lunch, and it's not as immediately striking as Pendulum was/is. Guess I built it up a hell of a lot!

Hmm - interesting. I think they're both great but to me 'Trio' has the edge - more reflective and, I have to say, the mental instability issues already noticeable. It really is a unique treasure. No doubting the impact/freshness of 'Pendulum' with Dave Tomlin added though.

Tomlin cinches that one for me - lopes along nicely but in a disjointed, just-shy-of-pulling-apart way. I like it. Now, the trio date seems content to stay in depths which the rest of the band - particularly Tomlin - seemed able to pull the music out of. To me, that tension keeps it together.

Btw, any thoughts on the remastering of the Impressed-Repressed series?

I thought the D'Silva and Taylor both a little "boomy." Is the Ardley like this also?

I'll have to give 'Greek Variations' another spin. I have the original LP and from my recollection they did a good job on the CD. One of the plusses of the CD is that you don't get the slight surface noise, which many of the early 70s Lansdowne LPs seem to have. All part of EMI's production I guess !

With the Taylor, I would definitely say that the best way to hear it is on LP, as with many piano trio records. It's a shame no-one has reissued that one and 'Pendulum' on 180g.
