ghost of miles Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 Sorry to report that Studs Terkel has passed away. Quote
T.D. Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 Sad news. RIP. I've read several of his books, saw him lecture at the NY Public Library not too many years ago, and heard many Chicago radio shows in the old days. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 Wow, RIP. He spoke at my graduation from the Art Institute of Chicago (as did Lucy Lippard). Assuming Obama wins, it would have been nice for Terkel to see the outcome of the election. Quote
Johnny E Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 Studs was THE MAN! He lived a nice long life though. Thanks for being here for a while Studs. I'll be thinking of ya'. Quote
Christiern Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 When I saw this on the news, I was ready for it. Terkel had been in poor health for some time and, at his age, this is to be expected. That does not make his passing less sad, but, on the positive side is the fact that he left a rich legacy. His books will continue to give valuable peeks into history and, if anything become even more important with the years. One of my favorites is Hard Times—I learned a lot from that and I love the concept on which he based it. How fortunate we are that he was so prolific. Quote
BruceH Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 He was older than Dan Schorr! And what a life! Quote

Jazzmoose Posted November 1, 2008 Report Posted November 1, 2008 Shit. There's a man who occupies a major portion of my shelves. No one lives forever, but sometimes you think there ought to be an exception... As far as a favorite, I'd have to make a difficult choice between Hard Times and Race, but if he wrote a bad one, or even a frivolous one, I haven't found it yet. The man wrote books that desperately needed to be written. Quote
papsrus Posted November 1, 2008 Report Posted November 1, 2008 One of the all-time great names. ... RIP. Quote
