Really enjoyed his playing on the Gil Evans date "Out Of The Cool". a recent purchase. I wish there was more of him on that album. Any other sessions of note worth looking into? One date he led for the Candid label looks interesting which features Johnny Coles, Cecil Payne and Junior Mance.

I'd try to get Katanga. Ray Crawford accompanying Dupree Bolton & Curtis Amy. When I walked into a room and heard ray soloing I thought it was Out of the Cool.

got the candid album a few weeks ago, naturally, it is not like out of the cool (just like, say, round midnight isn't sketches of spain), but it is definitely worth getting... haven't heard katanga so far, but since the prices differ by about a factor of 10, i'd say the candid can't be too bad a starting point

Buy the Curtis Amy Mosaic Select & you'll get Katanga(& a lot of other fine music).

I cherish that Candid LP - Crawford, Coles, and Payne is a great frontline, and Crawford made the best out of it. It's a tragedy this album was not issued at the time.

There are some very hard to find solo recordings ...

... but he already was at his best in the early Ahmad Jamal Trio that recorded for Parrott (reissued on Argo) and Epic - all of it is on this double CD:

Thanks for the input fellas on Ray Crawford. I've seen the Candid release available for a pretty reasonable price through Amazon Marketplace. Perhaps on the next round of purchases?

I love Ray's sound so much I made a point of hiring him for a Jimmy Smith jam session for the Chicago Jazz Festival a few years ago. He enjoyed Chicago and stayed around for a few months. From my perspective he was a very nice guy. At that point his Candid date had not been released and he said he'd not heard it since the session. Michael Cuscuna had access to the Candid tapes at the time and I prevailed on him for a dub of the masters. Ray was delighted.
