All these Classics have appeared recently in the Paris shops.

Got hold of the Mildred Bailey 1945-1947 CD last week.

Can someone enlighten on the Erskine Hawkins band and Classics discs? Were they just another big band of the period or were there any outstanding features, soloists in the band?

I think Erskine Hawkins had a better than average band, a few less than stellar vocalists, but that is to be expected isn't it? ^_^ Hawkins and Dud Bascomb are the "name" soloists, I have read somewhere that even though Hawkins was known for hitting high notes, it was really Bascomb most of the time...Also read that he had a very stable lineup thru the years, which may be why we don't know the names of the other bandmembers....I have 2 cds(3 if you count the 2 cd set that way) I have a black and Blue label cd called from Alabama to Harlem 1938-1940, that I am surprised to see is still in print...it is pretty good, but the value for the money set is the Collectables cd called "the Complete Erskine Hawkinds, 1938-39 2 cds with 34 tracks, with nice remastering... click on the link below to listen to the tracks, and/or get it for $12.99!

Just putting the cd in, I can't really think of another band that they sound like, not that they are that original, just nice late 30's swing......

Does anyone know anything about;

Billy Kyle 1939-1946

Lucky Millinder 1943-1947

Alix Combelle 1935-1940

Johnny Guarnieri 1944-1946

Skeets Tolbert 1931-1940

Spirits of Rhythm 1933-1945

Maxine Sullivan 1938-1941

I picked these up SEALED at the local store on sale. $8

Wondering if I should keep them?

Tolbert looks like a clarinet guy, so I'm interested in him. Never really hear of the others.

They are all likely good. Combille was a French tenor player, some of these may have Django in the band, interesting stuff. Tolbert was a great player; I have the OTHER Classics under his name and some of this material on an lp issue. . . sort of hot novelty small group/medium group swing. Maxine could SING. Johnny Guarneri and Billy Kyle were great pianists: the former famous for his work with Benny Goodman and in Basie member small bands, the latter best known for his work with John Kirby and Louis Armstrong. The Spirits of Rythm were a great tipple/guitar/vocals novelty swing band. . . Teddy Bunn and Leo Watson were the stars. . . . Lucky Millinder was a swing then r and b band; Dizzy had a stretch with them. Nice batch.

I recently bought the Maxine and, er, a few other Classics in the Tower give-away. She has a great voice and I dig her jazz work, but be prepared for a lot of slow, folk-like songs on the cd you picked up. She sings a bit with Thornhill, whose post war work I like much better than from this period. As I recall, she really only swings on the last 2 cuts.

What Tower give-away???? Funny what you mention about Maxine...She is one of the very few ultra mellow singers I really like!

It was released on May 15 in France. A quick look at Jazzmatazz shows that it is not yet scheduled for release in the States. The Classics releases listed on Jazzmatazz for August have been out in France since April.

The Shaw album includes the following material :

The remainder of the Musicraft sessions from June 19, 1946 to November 11, 1946 (the first Musicraft dates are on Classics 1330). The 6-sided set of "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" from July 28 is not included. It is available on Crystal Stream IDCD 45/46.

The jazz-slanted Columbia items from "Modern Music For Clarinet" (the classical pieces from that album have been omitted) : "The Man I Love"/"I Concentrate On You" - "Mood In Question"/"Rendezvous For Clarinet And Strings"

The first two Decca sessions, December 30, 1949 ("Orinoco"/"Mucho De Nada") and January 3, 1950 ("Love Is The Sweetest Thing"/"I Get A Kick Out Of You").

Thanks for the info. FrancoisD. :tup

On a side note, I wonder if Neatwork will ever come out with the alternate takes of the Artie Shaw recordings. Would be good to have those to complement the Classics series.
