Hardbopjazz
I remember back a good 6 or 7 years ago, someone on the old Blue Note forum claiming to have a copy of the Coltrane and Montgomery Monterey concert from September 1961. Does anyone remember this? Edited January 10, 2009 by Hardbopjazz
WD45
I remember seeing an ebay auction about it, anyway.
Late
I remember that discussion too, but don't remember the poster. I can't remember what the consensus was: whether or not a tape actually exists. On the same note — does anyone remember when Stan Getz's son posted on the BNBB? BruceH
On the same note — does anyone remember when Stan Getz's son posted on the BNBB? Yes! I seem to recall that. But after a small number of posts he never posted again.
Late
He posted a touching (well, to me) story about how his dad would call him on his birthday, from wherever he was, and play Happy Birthday over the phone. Kenny Dorham's daughter posted once or twice, too.
ghost of miles
The alleged Wes/Coltrane tape (1961, Monterey?) has come up for discussion several times before, both at the BNBB and here, I believe. I think Porter lists a reference to it in his bio...45-minute audience recording? I remember somebody saying that they'd been offered a cassette copy of it for the low, low price of $2500. Speculative consensus seems to be that while we'd all like to hear it, it probably would not blow anybody's mind. What mention of the Wes/Trane gigs is there in the updated Coltrane reference book? ghost of miles
Didn't Warne Marsh's son post here several times as well?
Aggie87
I believe so, as well as Al Haig's widow (board name "Grange Lady Haig Rutan"). And I thought someone else's son or daughter, as well...but don't recall who
.:.impossible
Dookie Coleman!
Late
Yep, the Dookie thread: "I Am Dookie Coleman!" That was a winner. I wish he'd sign up and enliven the scene here. I actually half-believe his story. Aggie — I think maybe you're thinking of Joe Albany's daughter? I think she posted either here or on the BNBB. Joe Albany At Home is one I've been spinning lately. Good stuff.
jazzbo
Gene Ludwig and his wife (?) have posted here. . . .
Shrdlu
There is actually a recording of Wes with Trane? Much as I like them all, I can't really imagine Wes with Trane and Eric Dolphy. What a ridiculous mismatch.
jazzbo
I'll bet it would surprise you. Doesn't seem like a "ridiculous mismatch" to me. Three original front line voices, spurring each other on . . . . I'd buy it.
John Tapscott
There is actually a recording of Wes with Trane? Much as I like them all, I can't really imagine Wes with Trane and Eric Dolphy. What a ridiculous mismatch. I was thinking about this, and then Lon posted pretty much what I was going to say. You remember how Wes "smoked" on Impressions? I actually think there would be quite a bit of compatibility. Three great soloists, each with their own individual voices, all playing on the same field, if not the same position, yet inspiring one another. I bet Wes would have sounded great with Elvin behind him.
Jazzmoose
I wouldn't go as far as ridiculous mismatch, but I probably wouldn't buy it until Shrdlu did. But then, I confess to not being that big on most jazz guitarists anyway.
