some RVGs not seen in stores

I did a scan of the RVG titles at the Blue Note site. I was checking to see which RVGs I don't have. I counted four titles I don't have. I haven't purchased Blue Train or Birth of the Cool because I already have earlier copies of each.

Yes, I know I can order RVG titles from the internet, yet, I haven't purchased Jazz Immortal or Groovin' At Small's because I've never seen the titles in stores.

Where are they? Which other RVG titles are not seen in the stores?

I can´t speak about these in US stores but as far as UK and Europe is concerned, these two are regularly seen. I've got the feeling that the Smith was in the very earliest batch of RVGs and have often mistaken this one as being a Conn as I usually see it without the slipcase.

Both were widely distributed in stores in the US (that's where I bought 'em), and probably still are.

I can safely state that I've never seen 'Jazz Immortal' in any of the shops I visit frequently. I've heard that some RVG (and Conn) titles aren't distributed in this country.

I've never seen that Jimmy Smith either locally. I did however buy 'Jazz Immortal ' brick & mortar. I'm also having a bit of trouble catching 'My Point of View' and 'The Prisoner' - easy to find online, but not in my local stores.

I have to say, I've seen both Jazz Immortal and Groovin' At Small's many times at various stores. Now The Prisoner isn't so common, even around here---I can only recall seeing it at the local Tower with the good jazz section.

It doesn't matter how common it is to see a title in stores (and I've seen all of the titles mentioned in stores myself). As long as the item is in print, it should be available through any store, anywhere. You just have to ask them to special order it for you.

I don't know many stores in my area which have a representative jazz selection, so I can't say which RVGs are hard to find. The biggest CD store in my city has no Blue Note CDs at all (and no OJCs either) except Norah and some samplers.

In the U.S. perhaps, but not here. Upon my question the owner of a record shop said (which may be true or false) that a few titles did not have distribution in Sweden, apparently by decision by the Swedish subsidiary of EMI.

I know they were available because I picked them up at a small store here in Jersey. It's possible there wasn't much fanfare about Jimmy Smith but I know there was about Jazz Immortal.

The prices were higher at first (too high!), and that may had led to it's being ignored by some. I passed over it because I have so many other Smith albums.

Both were available here when they came out coupla years ago. I have seen recently secondhand copies of the Clifford Brown and the Jimmy Smith Groovin albums.

The Jimmy Smith 2CD was available as a single CD priced when it came out.

This is probably one of the few Jimmy Smith NOT to be missed.

I have around 30 RVGS and I got everyone at Towers and I never had a problem finding them. I have also seen every other one there at some time.

I made a weekend trip to Columbus, Ohio this past weekend (from Tucson, Arizona). I did some looking at jazz CDs in the chain stores (Borders, B&N) and in a local store my friend recommended (I forgot the name). All the stores had several RVGs in stock but non had Jazz Immortal or Groovin' at Small's.

As I wrote earlier in this thread, I know I can purchase these RVGs from the internet whenever I choose. It's interesting, though, that I've never seen certain RVGs in stores.

Again, though, in California they are all over the place - Borders, Tower, etc. Weird.
