alocispepraluger102 Posted August 17, 2009 Report Posted August 17, 2009 (edited) much as we love music, sappy over the top music is tasteless, ineffective, and overkill. pres. bush made a national address the morning after 911. the crappy 'inspiring' contrived tasteless background music defeated the purpose of the whole thing the dems and big pharma are now running some heart-tugging health promo ads, and the music renders them over the top, trite and tasteless. can you recall other instances of inappropriately timed (or chosen) music? carnivore Posted August 17, 2009 Report Posted August 17, 2009 True story - on BBC Radio2 when Bing Crosby's death was announced the presenter reached for the first Crosby record to hand, cued up the first track, told the listeners that Crosby was dead and started the record. The first thing heard was the old groaner singing, courtesy of Irving Berlin - "Heaven, I'm in Heaven..... Quote

AllenLowe Posted August 17, 2009 Report Posted August 17, 2009 years ago I played for William Styron's birthday party up somewhere in Connecticut (had Harold Danko on piano) - when in walked Mia Farrow. This was not long after her famous battle with a famous comedian over an affair and child custody. I said to the band - how about we play "Woody 'n You" ? they refused - Quote

Teasing the Korean Posted August 17, 2009 Report Posted August 17, 2009 Soundtracks from any movie made in the '70's. Are you KIDDING??? First half of the 70s, or second half of the 70s???? There's a lot of great music in the first half of the 70s, including gems by Lalo Schifrin, Don Ellis, Morricone. I would say mainstream film music started to suck in the post-Star Wars era. Quote
Dan Gould Posted August 17, 2009 Report Posted August 17, 2009 How about porn flicks? At least, when they didn't involve any famous jazz musicians (the soundtracks, not the porn). Quote

Joe G Posted August 18, 2009 Report Posted August 18, 2009 (edited) Thread title is asking something different to me: music is not necessary when I'm walking in the woods, floating down a river, climbing a tree; or birdwatching, people watching, stargazing, looking at art, or a new baby. Also when I'm reading, it's a distraction. Having said that, I do recognize when advertisers and the like are trying to manipulate me with music. Most of the time it's rather laughable. Also, for people like me (and many members here) there is no such thing as background music. I have a great deal of difficulty tuning it out. p.s., I really dislike music pumped into outdoor spaces, like on the sidewalk in front of a restaurant. If it were Bach or Mozart, I might let it slide. Usually, however, it's crap, and an intrusion into my personal sound space. Edited August 18, 2009 by Joe G Quote
