Brad Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 For those who live in northwestern New Jersey, the F.Y.E. in the Rockaway Mall (off of Exit 35 on Route 80) is closing and they are having sales (20 to 40 percent). Apparently F.Y.E. and the landlord couldn't agree on the rent so they're closing the store. As they have a great selection of music and DVDs, it's a bit of a bummer. Quote
BeBop Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 Wow, I though virtually all of the FYEs had already closed. I'm exaggerating a bit; I still see them from time to time, but... Quote
Aggie87 Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 Ours closed about a year ago for the same reason - new mall ownership jacked the rent up, and FYE said no thanks. Our mall has no music or book stores anymore, which always seemed like mall staples to me. Our FYE didn't particularly have a great inventory, but they did buy used items and there was no haggling or subjectivity on the buyer's part as they had some database that told them what things were valued at and what price was to be offered, which I liked. BruceH Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 I also thought the whole chain had closed. So many others have... Quote
Brad Posted November 23, 2009 Author Report Posted November 23, 2009 No, they're still around but when I got the email Saturday night, I thought the same. However, on Sunday I talked to one of the people who works there who I knew a little, little bit and she told me it was a rent thing. Near me, they have one near Wayne on Route 46 and one in the Willowbrook Mall. Quote

7/4 Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 There's one near me in a strip mall. Their Jazz section is quite thin, but I stop in if I'm in the the neighborhood in case they have something used, cheap and interesting. * Quote

You just never knew what you were going to find there. Quote
Brad Posted December 4, 2009 Author Report Posted December 4, 2009 Just got an email saying they're increasing the discounts to 50%! Quote
BruceH Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 Wow, almost makes me wish I lived in New Jersey. And you don't hear that very often. Quote
AndrewHill Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 FYE here is hanging on by a shoestring focusing mainly on games and movies more than anything else. They haven't really had anything of mild interest for about 10 years, so I haven't bothered stopping in unless I'm in the mall for something else, which is hardly ever. Quote
colinmce Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 Went to mine, which is closing also; same junk they had last time I went (6 months ago). The only decent stuff they had were a few box sets (Parker Dial/Savoy, Evans Secret Sessions, Pepper Hollywood Sessions, Miles 65-68, Ornette Atlantic), but not at a price that made them at all worth my while. 7/4 Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 Maybe I should stop at that RT. 22 store and see what's going on there. . Quote
colinmce Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 Also, maybe they would have less problems if they didn't list their regular CDs at $19.99. Just a suggestion. Reminds me of Blockbuster Music back in the '90s. Insane prices. I remember seeing the Beatles Red and Blue albums and the Rolling Stones Hot Rocks set selling for forty dollars. Quote
Aggie87 Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 Also, maybe they would have less problems if they didn't list their regular CDs at $19.99. Just a suggestion. I believe their prices were due to their usual location in malls, with higher rent than other stores. I don't think bargain shoppers or music fans were their target market. Mall shoppers and other impulse buyers maybe. Quote
Harold_Z Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 In addition to the Willowbrook Mall store mentioned above, there is a second FYE in Wayne at the Preakness Shopping Center on Hamburg Turnpike. In nearby Clifton there is an FYE in Styrertown. None of them are of much interest to jazzers. Quote
Brad Posted December 5, 2009 Author Report Posted December 5, 2009 I can't speak for the other stores here in Jersey but at Rockaway, there was a customer who used to trade in a lot of his jazz cds and I picked quite a few good things at cheap prices. Quote
bertrand Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 I'm confused - 7/4 lives in NJ and I live in D.C. How can I be he and he be me? Bertrand. Quote
