bertrand Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 This is one of the few Miles CDs I do not have yet. It seems there are two versions out there: 1) A single CD set with the original LP + 4 bonus tracks 2) A 2-CD set with a second live CD, containing one track from Miles' Newport comeback plus other live tracks. Is the live CD worth it? I seem to remember there were audio-fidelity issues with the live stuff which made me want to stay away - same reason I avoided the '51 Birdland set on Blue Note. Thanks, Bertrand. Quote
kh1958 Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 Yes, the 2CD set is worth it for the Pasadena concert with the classic first quintet. This concert is well recorded. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 +1 It's disappointing they didn't add the rest of the Newport appearance, but oh well. Sound is acceptable on this date, stunningly good on the Pasadena. Quote
J.A.W. Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 This set is definitely worth it. Quote
kh1958 Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 (edited) The Pasadena concert seems like a major discovery--I wondered why there was not more acclaim for this. I agree, they should have included all of the Newport performance. Edited February 15, 2010 by kh1958 Quote
AllenLowe Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 I still can't figure out why you didn't want the 1951 Birdland, which is incredible. Quote
John L Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 I still can't figure out why you didn't want the 1951 Birdland, which is incredible. No shit. I guess the complaint is that the sound quality doesn't meet serious audiophile standards. I am happy that I can still really enjoy music that doesn't. Quote
bertrand Posted February 15, 2010 Author Report Posted February 15, 2010 Great, now i have to buy TWO CDs, including a twofer Bertrand. Quote
kh1958 Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 Great, now i have to buy TWO CDs, including a twofer Bertrand. Yes, but the twofer can be had for the price of onefer. Quote
bertrand Posted February 16, 2010 Author Report Posted February 16, 2010 Where would I find such a deal? Got Birdland '51 today for $8 at Borders'. Killer music. The first and third dates are perfectly acceptable sonically. There are some issues with the second date - there's a couple of long stretches of really annoying tape hiss, I'm not sure what it is exactly. Bertrand. Quote
Quincy Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 (edited) Where would I find such a deal (Legacy Ed. of 'Round About Midnight)? Deepdiscount for $12.97 (free shipping) There may be better deals out there as that was the 1st place I looked. Edited February 16, 2010 by Quincy Quote
