I just heard a track off this album a short time ago and it sounded quite nice. Zoot seems to in fine form and being a big fan, what do you guys think of this release? I already own a good number of Zoot's releases during this time period 70's/80's and think this might make a fine addition.

I have this one but it's failed to capture my imagination. I'll have to give it some more listens.

FWIW, it's on this chronological grab-bag of the 100 best jazz recordings (London Telegraph). .. No. 80.

EDIT: Happily listening to it again now. Capturing my imagination. Thanks for bringing it up. Although I don't know his playing well, Zoot seems in fine form.

Which track was it that caught your attention?

Basie and Zoot is a fine Pablo release, its definitely worth getting.

As is another Basie collaboration on Pablo called The Gifted Ones, with Dizzy.

I was pleasantly surprised at how good both of these releases were (inexpensive cut outs of both have been available recently).

Agreed with the previous recommendations. I wasn't overly fond of those 70s Pablo jam sessions earlier on (had heard lots of them on jazz radio shows in the early 80s but somehow they didn't click with me all the way) but the Basie and Zoot LP was the first of the Basie Pablos I ever bought, and I havent' regretted it one bit. A very solid and valid addition to my array of Zoot Sims records (which for the most part cover his earlier years, though).

What I love about the Pablo label is that Norman Granz didn't care about making any big artistic statements. He just put great musicians together and gave them an opportunity to blow. "Basie and Zoot" is a perfect example of two seasoned pros doing what they do best.

Attn: Concord: here's your new slogan for the new Pablo reissue campaign: "Pablo: the Surprisingly good jazz label!"

Unfortunately, their real motto is "Everything but the Obvious is Going Out of Print."

I'm right there with you. It took me quite some time, but I love cds. Will cling to the format as long as I can.

Me too. I recently downloaded the album Sarah Vaughan made with Jimmy Rowles for Mainstream because there was no other way to get it, but I'm missing the "stuff" that comes with it--cover art, liner notes, etc. I can scrounge together something and sort of make my own cd, but it just ain't the same. I have to wonder, though, how long it will be before Mosaic starts a download service on its discs.

That's four of us. As difficult as it is for me to own "stuff", I'll continue to store (hoard) CDs, LPs, 78s, 45s, elcasets, reel-to-reels, sheet music, other written music and the like.

A most enjoyable session and a showcase for Count Basie's piano talent!

One thing I do not like about the CD reissue is the colorized version of the original album cover photo (by Norman Granz)!
